8
Typical FTTX Network

9
Fiber To The X ( FTTX )

10
Components of FTTX Network

 OLT – Optical Line Terminal, generally to be placed CSS – eNodeB / AG1 location.
May be placed in HEX ODC. The equipment used is Nokia OLT 7360 ISAM FX-4 (FX-4
means having Four Line Cards towards customer side).
As per the RJIL FTTx design One OLT POP location have maximum Two Feeder
Rings.
 Feeder Section – Fiber from OLT PON (Passive Optical Network) Port to Stage1 (S1)
Splitter output
 Distribution Section – Distribution is the fiber from Stage1 Splitter (S1) to Stage2
Splitter (S2) output
 Drop Section – Drop Fiber from Stage2 Splitter to Customer Premise.
 ONT – Optical Network Terminal at customer premise.
Components of FTTX Network

 From a single S1, maximum 8 S2 can be connected . S1 splitter is ratio is 2:8 means (Two inputs
and Eight Outputs). Two inputs are basically providing the physical diversity path to the S1
locations, so even during single cut isolation can be restored within minimum possible time by
Field team by manually changing the patch cords at FDP end.
 From a single S2, maximum 8 customers can be connected
 As per RJIL specification OLT to ONT section is called as “GPON or ODN “part.
 Splitter attenuation is 10.5dB each for both the Splitters i.e. S1 & S2.
 Overall Link GPON link (OLT to ONT) attenuation or Loss is 28dB. However, for O & M acceptance
it is considered as 25dB till ONT and 3dB margin is kept for O & M.
PON Advantages

Fiber Passive Optical Network-

 Shared Feeder Fiber – Lowers CAPEX

 Minimal number of optical transceivers
 Greenfield per-customer cost similar to UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair)
 Passive splitters translate to lower cost
 Can be installed anywhere
 No power needed
 Essentially unlimited MTBF(Mean time between failures)

14
What is GPON

15
GPON Benefits

16
GPON Benefits

17
Services offered through GPON

Residential Services offered through GPON network:

 High Speed Data Access

 Landline Voice

 Live TV & Catch up TV (4K & HD).

 TV Based Video calling

 On demand Video

 OTT Services like( Gaming, On demand music, cloud drive, Media shared across
devices, Education, Health & e-Commerce).

18
GPON Principle- Downstream Data

19
GPON Principle- Upstream Data

1. Each User is given a time slot on which data

can be transmitted(TDM)
2. Upstream traffic is not continuous , but
composed of bursts

 TDMA mode

OLT Overview

23
OLT Overview

 NT Redundancy
The protection scheme for NT redundancy is 1+1(active/active) in the data plane and
1:1(active/standby) in the control and management plane.

 Fan Unit
 One fan unit provides forced air cooling in the shelf.
 The fan unit is a field replaceable unit in the shelf fan area and plugs directly
into
the backplane. The fan unit can be equipped with a fan filter.

 GFC Card
The GFC provides connections for external power, circuit breakers for system
protection, visual indications for power availability, and collection and cascading of
external alarms.
24
OLT Overview

 Optical fiber management kit:

 Optical fiber management kit should be installed on 7360 ISAM FX-4
shelves to ensure proper fiber handling and cable routing from NT & LT
cards.
 The optical fiber management guide elements are included in a kit that is
field replaceable and can be installed on site.

OLT Hardware
The 7360 ISAM FX-4 can be equipped with
Maximum of 4 LT cards, 2 NT cards, 1NGFC and
1NTIO card. In present scenario RJIO is using Single
NT card on slot NT-A and NTIO is not used.

 OLT Hardware:
 7360 ISAM FX-4 : OLT chassis with NGFC card
And Fan Tray
 FGLT –B : Line Terminal Card (LT)
 FANT-F: Network Termination Card (NT)
 NGFC-F : Power Card
 FAN Tray: One FAN tray with Four Fans
 Stiffeners : NT/LT/NTIO

27
OLT Hardware
NT Card (FANT-F):
 4 Uplinks Port configurable for 1Gbps or 10Gbps
 1Gbps RJ-45 interface
 480 Gb/s switching capacity
 Active-Active mode for load sharing

31
OLT Deployment Assumptions

 OLT will be deployed in Layer 2 mode.

 OLT will always be dual homed to a pair of AG2 routers in a ring. Maximum two
OLTs are considered as part of ring.

 OLT will have 10G+10G uplink each from Single NT or dual NT card to form the
OLT ring with AG2 pair.

 Split ratio is implemented using 2 stages where S1 splitter will have 2:8 split
ratio and S2 splitter will have 1:8 split ratio.

32
HEX ODC

Utility Alarm extension:

 HEX ODC are designed to install OLTs, which will improve temperature conditions
for
optimum performance for OLT. Infra alarms of these racks will be transmitted to the
utility EMS (NMMi/TeMIP) via the OLT.

 There are two types of installation of HEX ODC

 HEX at the existing CSS/AG1 sites

HEX related alarms will be transmitted via OLT, whereas SMPS alarms will be
transmitted via existing CSS/AG1.

 HEX at the standalone OLT sites

In this scenario, both HEX & SMPS alarms will be transmitted via OLT.
