General Instructions: This laboratory activity will be good for one (1) session only. You have the
option to do this remotely or during our laboratory schedule. This is a group activity, make sure to
submit one Laboratory Report for each group. The deadline for your laboratory output will be
on November 11, 2022, at 5 PM.

Theory:, causing an electromagnetic wave or radio signal to be emitted outwards from the
antenna.

Aim: To plot the radiation pattern of the dipole antenna using MATLAB software
Software Required: MATLAB Software
Theory: The dipole aerial or antenna is extensively used for several radio communication
applications. It serves as the radiating or driving element for the total antenna. The word 'dipole'
refers to the fact that a dipole antenna is made up of two poles or components - two conducting
pieces. Current travels through these two conducting parts
Program: Use a MATLAB program to generate the radiation pattern of a half-wave dipole
antenna that is made to resonate at 2.4 GHz.
Output:
Discussion: (Answer the following guide questions)
1. What is the numerical value of the dipole antenna length with the given specifications above without
considering the end effect? Show solution.

2. What is its length when the end effect is considered? Show solution.

3. What is the radiation resistance of a dipole antenna?

- The resistance of a dipole antenna to radiation is approximately 73 ohms.
4. What are the effects of the wavelength on the directivity and radiation pattern for dipole antennas?
- The wavelength of the signal influences the directivity and radiation pattern of the
dipole antenna. A longer wavelength requires a larger antenna and also produces a
higher impedance. The wavelength also affects the shape of the radiation pattern, with
a longer wavelength resulting in an omnidirectional pattern.
5. Does the dipole antenna have the same response in all directions in the azimuth (horizontal) plane?
Explain the radiation pattern of a dipole antenna briefly.
- The dipole antenna emits a donut-shaped radiation pattern in the azimuth (horizontal)
plane. The antenna is most sensitive to incoming waves that are perpendicular to it in
the "broadside" direction. Waves that are parallel to the antenna are the least sensitive.
