1. POV AND VOICE OF
LITERATURE
POINT OF VIEW

First Person : an internal perspective of one characters ,

indentified by use of “I”

EXAMPLE :There are places I'll remember All my life, though some
have changed Some forever, not for better Some have gone and some
remain All these places had their moments With lovers and friends, I still
can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life, I've loved them
all
POINT OF VIEW
3rd Person Omnisicient : Narrator is outside of the story ,knows
what th characters think feel and why they behave the way they do.
EXAMPLE:“Just because it's a mild night doesn't mean that dark forces aren't abroad. They're
abroad all the time. They're everywhere.
They always are. That's the whole point.
Two of them lurked in the ruined graveyard. Two shadowy figures, one hunched and squat, the other lean
and menacing, both of them Olympic-grade lurkers. If Bruce Springsteen had ever recorded ‘Born to Lurk,'
these two would have been on the album cover. They had been lurking in the fog for an hour now, but they
had been pacing themselves and could lurk for the rest of the night if necessary, with still enough sullen
menace left for a final burst of lurking around dawn.”
POINT OF VIEW

3rd Person Limited : in regards to a singlr charcter , can

enter the heart and mind of character, but cannot tell us what
the other characters are thinking and feeling
EXAMPLE: “The Dursleys hadn’t even remembered that
today happened to be Harry’s twelfth birthday. Of course, his
hopes hadn’t been high; they’d never given him a real present,
let alone a cake – but to ignore it completely…”
POINT OF VIEW

Objective : often reffered to as “ fly on the wall perspective

.Narrator observe describes but does not judge or offer
insights into characters or situation within the text.

EXAMPLE: "He watched from a distance as the police

officer questioned the subject,"
SUMMARY

 Is a significant choice a fiction writer makes because it directly influence

how readers perceive the text
 By choosing 1st person the writer is directly challenging the readers sensitivity,
if not tolerance .
 Presenting sensitive issues in 3rd person can allow the readers some distance
from which to view it.
A CHOSEN ANGLE OF VISION JUST LIKE
POV LIMITS WHAT WE ALL CAN SEE,AS
WELL ASWHAT WE KNOW
INSIGHT INTO POV

WHY WOULD THE WRITERS CHOOSE ONE POINT OF

VIEW OVER ANOTHER?

IS FIRST PERSN POINT OF VIEW ALWAYS MORE

VOICE IN LITERATURE
VOICE IN LITERATURE

 Narrative voice is wholly dependent upon the writer’s choice of narration

 The tone of the narrators voice is a narrative feature .
 if the the narrator is a first person we have a character , a body ,on which
to hang the voice
 In a third person disembodied voice of a narrator is not without
understanding and not judgement and bias .The only voice that does not
judge objective
 The choice of POV is purposeful and strategic .A narrators distances from
the action determines the readers response to that action .

descriptions that leave some things up to the
reader's imagination.
INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

device that reveals details about a character
