READING
It is a cognitive
process that involves
decoding symbols to
arrive at meaning.

• Often also called as
high frequency sight
words
• They are commonly
used words that
young children are
encouraged to
memorize as a whole
by sight
 The International Phonetic Alphabet was created
by the International Phonetic Association as a
standardized way to write the sounds of spoken
language.
 Why do we need this? Because English is not a
phonetic language — that means there’s not a 1:1
relationship between letters and sounds.
Sound 1 –
‘a’ as in apple – short vowel sound – æ (IPA)

Other examples: bat, cat, cap, man

Sound 2 –
‘a’ as in snake – long vowel sound – eɪ (IPA)

Other examples: cake, bake, gate, made


Sound 3 –
‘a’ as in father – broad sound – ɑː (IPA)

Other examples: car, bath, ask, grass

Sound 4 –
‘a’ as in ball – o sound – ɔː (IPA)

Other examples – call, war, fall


Sound 5 –
‘a’ as in many – e sound – ɛ (IPA)

Other examples – any, anything,


anywhere
Synonyms - a word or phrase that means
exactly or nearly the same as another word
or phrase in the same language.

It was an idyllic day, sunny, warm, and


perfect for a walk in the park.
Antonym – a word opposite in
meaning to another

Marty is gregarious, unlike his


brother who is quiet and shy.
Explanation - the unknown word is
explained within the sentence

We know the dog has a kind


disposition because we’ve never seen
her bite or scratch anyone.
Examples - Specific examples are used to
analyze the meaning of the word.

Celestialbodies, suchasthe sun, moon,


and stars, are governed by
predictable laws
Definition - defining the unfamiliar word
within the sentence.

Diane was lethargic; she didn’t have the

• The COVER tells the
reader what the book
will be about.

• Usually includes:

– the title of the book
– the author(s)

• The TITLE PAGE repeats the


information given on the cover.
• Provides the reader with
information about:

– it’s author(s)

– the publisher’s locations
