Pipeline Study Area

> The existing National Grid gas pipeline is located approximately

3km east of the Tilbury site

> The railway line running from London Fenchurch Street to

Shoeburyness forms the northern boundary of the study area

> The environmental constraints within the search area are being
investigated and the outcome of the assessment will be used to
inform the final route choice

> Physical (e.g. substrate type) and technical considerations will

also be considered in the final route design

> The pipeline search area covers approximately 522 hectares

Pipeline Construction Options

> The potential methods available for the construction of the pipeline
are:

– Cut and cover

– Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD)

– A combination of the above

> The construction method used will be confirmed when the final route
design is available

> The pipeline will be buried for its entire length, with an above ground
installation (AGI) present at either end of the route

RWE npower
Pipeline Construction 1 (Cut and Cover)

> A temporary construction area, 30m wide will be fenced off along
the pipeline route (the ‘spread’)

> Gaps, approximately 15-20m wide, will be cut in the hedges where
necessary

> The topsoil will be stripped and stacked to one side

> Where necessary, pre-construction drainage work will be

undertaken

Road, Rail and River Crossings

> The proposed route will not cross the river or railway line

> No major road crossings are required

> Minor roads are typically crossed using “trench less” techniques
and would usually remain open during this process

RWE npower
Road Crossings

> No road closures are

anticipated

> Warning signs will be used

to warn motorists where
pipeline construction plant
crosses a road

RWE npower
Pipeline Construction 2

> Steel pipes are delivered to the ‘spread’. Pipes will be delivered to
storage areas along the spread (located within RWE npower
landownership where possible)

> The location of these storage areas and the HGV route to them
will be agreed with the relevant local authority with the aim of
ensuring minimal disruption to local communities

> The pipes will be laid out in a ‘string’ along the pipeline route

> The pipes will be welded together and the joints coated

Pipes are welded

together to form a
“string” before being
lowered into the trench

RWE npower
Pipeline Construction 3

> A trench will be excavated for the pipe and the subsoil piled on the
opposite side of the spread to the topsoil

> The continuous pipe will be lowered into the trench

> Depending upon the type of subsoil, sand bedding may be

required

> The pipeline trench will be backfilled and the land reinstated

RWE npower
Pipeline Construction 4 – Horizontal Directional
Drill (HDD)

> The alternative means of installation is by Horizontal Directional

Drilling. This method is used when trenching or excavating is not
practical and can be used for installations in diverse rock and soil
conditions

> Environmental disruption is minimised as this is a steerable

trenchless method of installation and therefore does not require
excavation or trenching

> Further studies are ongoing to determine whether this is a technically

viable option at Tilbury

Gas Pipeline Reinstatement
> Reinstatement means putting the land back to how it was before
the pipeline was laid. This could for example mean re-laying any
stretches of hedgerow removed and re-seeding pasture land

> Reinstatement is completed seasonally – e.g. pasture land would

be seeded in the spring or autumn

> Reinstatement details will be agreed with landowners and

approved by the relevant local authority

> Marker posts will show the location of a gas pipeline route

Phase 1 Consultation Exercise
> This public exhibition focuses on the proposed gas pipeline associated
with the CCGT development proposals. Further exhibitions are being held
on the following dates which will focus on the CCGT development as a
whole:

– Monday 23 August 2010, 3pm until 8pm

Woodville Halls, Woodville Place, Gravesend

– Tuesday 24 August, 3pm until 8pm

Tilbury Community Association Centre, Civic Square,

Phase 1 Consultation Exercise

> If you wish to comment on any of the preliminary consultation

material then please visit the Tilbury C power station website –
www.rwenpower/tilbury

> There are links to all consultation material and details on how to
send your comments back to us. Please note, the deadline for this
process is 1st October 2010

> Responses will be collated and presented in a consultation report

(omitting any personal contact details). This report will document
comments and how these have been acted upon. Please note this
consultation report will be a public document and be submitted to the
Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) as part of the application
