STEPS IN ADDING VECTOR
QUANTITIES USING ANALYTICAL
METHOD
1.) COMPLETE THE TABULAR INFORMATION.
IT INCLUDES:
V – VECTOR
θ (theta) – REFERENCE ANGLE
VX – HORIZONTAL COMPONENT
VY – VERTICAL COMPONENT
REMEMBER:
• Note that the sign of Vx and Vy are based on the
direction.
• In Vx: East is positive and West is negative.
• In Vy: North is positive and South is negative.
• Make sure that the θ is in a standard reference angle.

2.) APPLY THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM .
• This step is necessary to get the resultant’s
magnitude.
PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM
c = √(a2 + b2)
R = √(∑VX2+ ∑VY2)
TO DO THIS:
• Just plug in the summation of Vx and Vy to the given
formula.
• Then try solving it.

3.) APPLY TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION.
• This step is used to determine the direction’s
degree/angle of the resultant vector.

TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTION FORMULA:

Tan-1 (opposite / adjacent)
Tan-1 (∑VY / ∑VX )
TO DO THIS:
• Just plug in the opposite and adjacent or the ∑VY and
∑VX to the given formula.

GRAPHICAL METHOD
GEN PHYSICS 1
Graphical Method:
Visualization: Graphical methods rely on vector diagrams and
geometric representation. They provide a visual way to understand
vector addition and find the resultant vector. This can be helpful in
grasping the concept of vector addition intuitively.
Estimation: Graphical methods are less precise compared to
analytical methods. While you can estimate the magnitude and
direction of the resultant vector by measuring the diagram, it may
not provide exact numerical values.
Geometric Construction: Graphical methods involve drawing
vectors to scale and using geometric constructions to find the
resultant vector. It's a useful tool for simple vector addition
problems.
Limited to Simple Cases: Graphical methods are typically
used for relatively simple problems with only a few vectors involved.
They become less practical for complex systems with numerous
vectors or non-trivial geometries.
Analytical Method:
Mathematical Precision: Analytical methods involve using
mathematical equations to calculate the resultant vector precisely.
This method is based on vector algebra, and you can obtain exact
numerical values for the resultant vector's magnitude and direction.
Algebraic Manipulation: Analytical methods typically involve
algebraic manipulation of vector components (e.g., adding or
subtracting components along x, y, and z axes) and using
trigonometric functions to find angles. This method is precise but can
be mathematically intensive, especially for complex systems with
many vectors.
Use of Vector Notation: Analytical methods often use vector
notation (e.g., i, j, k, or unit vectors) to express vectors in terms of
their components.
Suitable for Complex Systems: Analytical methods are well-
suited for solving problems involving multiple vectors, vector
components, and vector operations.
