CHAPTER 16
METAL COATING

1. GALVANISING
- Coating with zinc. Gives protection to steel up to 60 years
- Chemically cleaned, washed and fluxed substrate is immersed in
molten zinc
- Temp: is 425 º C and thickness is approximately 100µm
2. SHERADISING
- Coating zinc powder, just below the melting point, over nuts &
bolts
CHAPTER 16
METAL COATING

3. CALORISING
- Coating a substance with aluminum
- Carried out at 625ºC
4. ANODISING
- An electrolytic method of coating resulting in formation of dense
oxide layer of aluminum
- Oxidation is induced electrically
CHAPTER 16
METAL COATING

5. ELECTROPLATING
- Depositing metal on a surface electrically from a metal salt
solution
6. HOT METAL SPRAYING
- Any metal which can be easily melted can be sprayed.
- Zinc and Aluminum is most commonly sprayed
- Zinc is coated in rural areas and in alkaline environment(offshore)
- Aluminum is used in acidic environment. Used in high temperature
surfaces like exhaust stack, compressor exhaust etc. up to 540ºC.
- Can be applied by powder system, electric arc system & wire &
pistol system
CHAPTER 16
METAL COATING

WIRE & PISTOL SYSTEM

- Consist of the metal wire, pistol & heating element
- The metal used has high degree of purity( 99.5%)
- The wire is pushed forward through a gun and comes out is
melted by burners, melting the wire giving droplets of the metal.
- Fuel gases used is butane/propane & pure oxygen
- Coating thickness produced is 100-125µm
- 85-95% of original density is retained.
