CHAPTER 15
PAINT APPLICATION
- Three main basic methods for paint application:
- Brush
- Roller
- Spray
1. Brush Application
- Relatively slow, coating is of uneven thickness
- More environment friendly, less wastage, no spotting or overspray
- Brush application has a shear reaction, removes dust & dirt
- Can coat inaccessible areas like bolt, rivet, corners, weld, edges etc
CHAPTER 15

2. Roller Application
- Application is quick, no uniform thickness and leaves roller
stripple
- Does not work paint into the substrate. Not a recommended
method
- Not suitable for internal corners, welds toes, bolts, rivets and plate
over laps

3. Spray Application
- Three types
- Conventional spray
- Airless spray
- Electrostatic spray ( powder coating)
CHAPTER 15
PAINT APPLICATION

Conventional spray
- The conventional spray system uses a mixture of atomized air and
paint
- Air is the carrier.
- Conventional system are of three types
a. Suction Feed: paint container is underneath the gun. Fast moving
air will draw up the paint by the venturi principle of
the gun and atomized spray is produced
b. Gravity Feed: The paint container is above the gun and paint feeds
into the air stream by gravity

Conventional spray
c. Remote pressure pot:
- More capacity
- Uses two air channels. One to pressurize the paint and draw it out
and other to atomize the stream

CHAPTER 15
PAINT APPLICATION

Airless spray
- It is called because no air is used for atomization
- Atomization is done by forcing the paint at extremely high
pressure through a very small aperture
- Only one air channel used for pressurizing the paint
- Product data sheet will recommend the spraying pressure and tip
size. Recommended values are

CHAPTER 15
PAINT APPLICATION
Electrostatic spray
- Quickest and safest application method
- Mostly used for powder coating. Liquid paints also can be applied
- In powder coating the paints are solid powder and charged
electrostatically by spraying the powder through ionized air
- The paint is positively charges and the substrate part of the same circuit
is negatively charged
- The paint particle is attracted towards the substrate part
- Coating thickness is controlled by the voltage and higher thickness gives
an insulation effect
- The substrate shall be preheated ( line pipes) or post heated (thin steel
plate)
