EXPLAIN HAZARDS
AND RISKS IN THE
WORKPLACE
WHAT IS
HAZARDS?
What is a hazard?
The meaning of the word hazard can be confusing. Often dictionaries do not give
specific definitions or combine it with the term "risk". For example, one dictionary
defines hazard as "a danger or risk" which helps explain why many people use the
terms interchangeably.

There are many definitions for hazard but the most common definition when
talking about workplace health and safety is:

A hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse health effects on

something or someone
What are Workplace
Hazards?
• Workplace hazards are the sources of potential
harm or damage to someone or something in any
work environment. It can be material or any
activity that has the likelihood to cause injuries
under specific conditions. It should be eliminated
as soon as they are identified to prevent workplace
incidents or fatalities.
The 6 Most Common Types of
Workplace Hazards

BIOLOGICAL CHEMICAL ERGONOMIC

PSYCHOSOCIAL PHYSICAL SAFETY

Biological
• Biological hazards include
viruses, bacteria, insects,
animals, etc., that can cause
harm. For example, mould, dust,
blood and other bodily fluids,
vermin and other parasites.
Chemical
• The nature of a chemical hazard will
depend on the properties of the
chemicals used and stored on the
premises. It includes both health and
physical hazards, such as skin
irritation, carcinogenicity, flammability
and radiation.
Ergonomic
• Ergonomic hazards are a result of
physical factors that can lead to
musculoskeletal injuries. These
hazards include workstation setup,
poor posture and manual handling.
Psychosocial
• Psychosocial hazards
include hazards that can
have an adverse effect on an
individual’s mental health or
wellbeing including stress,
bullying and workplace
violence.
Physical

. Physical hazards are a

result of environmental
factors and include
heights, vibration,
radiation and pressure.
Safety
• Safety hazards are hazards that
create unsafe working conditions.
For example, melting ice could
cause a spill hazard or exposed
wires might result in a tripping
hazard.
WHAT IS RISKS ?
• Risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed
or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard.
It may also apply to situations with property or equipment
loss, or harmful effects on the environment .
What is a risk assessment?
Risk assessment is the process where you:
• Identify hazards and risk factors that have the potential to
cause harm (hazard identification).
• Analyze and evaluate the risk associated with that hazard (risk
analysis, and risk evaluation).
• Determine appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard, or control
the risk when the hazard cannot be eliminated (risk control).
