ECOTOURISM

“…tourism that consists in traveling to

relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated
natural areas with the specific objective of
studying, admiring, and enjoying the scenery
and its wild plants and animals, as well as any
existing cultural manifestations (both past and
present) found in these areas”.

DESCRIPTIVE VALUE-BASED

Other Definitions:

Ecotourism is a form of tourism marketed as

"responsible" travel (using what proponents say is
sustainable transport) to natural areas, conserving the
environment, and improving the well-being of the local
people. The stated purpose may be to educate the
traveler, to provide funds for ecological conservation, to
directly benefit the economic development and political
empowerment of local communities, or to foster respect
for different cultures and human rights.

ecotourism, n. ... Tourism to
areas of ecological interest
(typically exotic and often
threatened natural
environments), esp. to support
conservation efforts and observe
wildlife; spec. access to an
endangered environment
controlled to have the least
possible adverse effect.

Other Definitions:
Peter Valentine (1992) Nature-based tourism that is ecologically sustainable and is based
on relatively undisturbed natural areas, is non-damaging and non-
degrading, contributes directly to the continued protection and
management of protected areas, and is subject to an adequate and
appropriate management regime.

Kreg Lindberg & Donald E. Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas which conserves
Hawkins the environment and improves the welfare of local people.
(1993)

Harold Goodwin Low-impact tourism which contributes to the maintenance of

(1996) species and habitats either directly or indirectly through a
contribution to conservation and/or indirectly by providing
revenue to the local community sufficient for local people to
value, and therefore protect their wildlife heritage area as a source
of income.

Sustainable Tourism:

The United Nations World Tourism

Organization emphasized these practices by
promoting sustainable tourism as part of the
Sustainable Development Goals, through
programs like the International Year for
Sustainable Tourism for Development in
2017. There is a direct link between
sustainable tourism and several of the 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
