01 INTRODUCTION
 WHAT IS BASKETBALL?
Basketball is a team sport that is player by 2 teams with 5

players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court.

The purpose of the game is to put the ball into the opponent’s

goal and score many points as possible within a certain period

of time.
 HISTORY
 The game began in YMCA Springfield, Massachusetts on

December 1, 1891, and was invented by Canadian Physical

Education Instructor James Naismith.

 The first ball used was a Soccer ball.

 The first game was played with 9 players each team and

6 players per team in a women’s game.

 HISTORY
 The first public game of basketball was played in a

YMCA gymnasium and was recorded by the Springfield

Republican on March 12th, 1892.

 The game was played instructors against students and

around 200 spectators attended the newly discovered

game ending it with a score of 5-1 (student-

instructors).
 HISTORY
 The first professional league was the
National Basketball League (NBL) formed
in 1898, comprised of six teams in the
northeast. The league only lasted about
five years.
 The first NCAA tournament, which
included eight teams, was held in 1939
at Northwestern University. The first
collegiate basketball national champion
was the University of Oregon.
