CARTOONS
• A cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific
definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to a typically non-
realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or
humor. Distinct facial expressions. Wide variation in physical characteristics.
• ‘humour’ either linked to IRONY/PUNS/SARCASM/SATIRE/AMBIGUITY, etc. Know
the differences in meaning.
• Understand the purpose of the VISUAL and VERBAL ELEMENT in the cartoon. This is
important in understanding the cartoon and the message of the cartoon.
• Take note of the frames without any written texts but includes characters or images –
this is a visual literacy technique. It could indicate a pause or it could
highlight something important
• Cartoonists' persuasive techniques - Some of the techniques cartoonists use the most
are symbolism, exaggeration, labeling, analogy, and irony.
