Study design: it is a single blinded
randomized controlled trial.

Study population: 18 – 25 year adults.

Sample size: 90 subjects who fulfill the

inclusion and exclusion criteria's.

Antibiotics Analgesics Cough syrups

ARMAMENTARIUM
6 commonly prescribed paediatric
drugs

DISCUSSION:
 We found that endogenous pH of all drugs were
acidic with cough syrup being below critical pH.
Similarly,
 Lima et al showed that 74.2% of the drugs examined
had pH lower than 5.5.
 Sunitha et al showed that endogenous pH of all the
drugs considered were acidic in nature with cough
syrup being below the cariogenic critical pH .
 Rekola showed that drugs which are sweetened
produced drop in plaque pH.
Our results of the fall in pH after the drug was ingested
showed a high similarity as in the studies conducted earlier
by sunita et al, rekola m, srinivas and reddy.
The liquid medicaments have a great potential for causing
dental caries.
Further health workers should be informed regarding the
cariogenic potential of liquid medicaments so as to guide
the parents to introduce oral hygiene after consumption.
CONCLUSION :
we conclude that pH level is significantly
different among the drug groups. pH level is
low in analgesics than Antibiotics and cough
syrup. Also, pH level significantly drops till
the 20 minutes from the time of
consumption of drugs when compared to
the base pH.
RECOMMENDA
TION
!!!!!!
These sweeteners along with their low
endogenic pH form a high cariogenic
formulation. Thus, nonsucrose
(noncariogenic) or sugar-free medications
are needed to be prescribed along with
proper oral hygiene care to the children
under medication.
