ACTIVITY NO. 2
pH and BUFFERS

I- DISCUSSION:
pH, hydronium ion concentration, buffers
Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation: pH = pKa + log
Use of pH paper (litmus paper) and pH meter

II- PROCEDURE:
A. DETERMINATION OF pH
1. Classify the following substances if it is acidic or basic. Complete the table below:

SAMPLE CLASSIFICATION

1. milk Acidic
2. egg white Basic
3.vinegar Acidic
4.coke Acidic
5.pepsi Acidic
6. coffee Acidic
7. tea Acidic
8. calamansi juice Acidic
9. chlorox Basic
10.shampoo Acidic
11. soap solution Basic
12. detergent solution Basic
13. rubbing alcohol Basic
14. hydrogen peroxide Acidic
15. beer Acidic
16. baking soda soln. Basic
III- QUESTIONS:
1. Give the meaning of pH and buffer.
 pH is a measure of concentration of H+ [H3O+] ions in a solution, pH values
represent how basic or acidic solution is, 7 stands for neutrality in the range of 0
to 14, pH values less than 7 signify
pH acidity and over 7 denotes base
 Buffer solutions resist a change in PH when small amount of a strong acid or
strong base are added.
2. Give the importance of pH.
 pH is an important quantity that reflects the chemical conditions of a solution. The
pH can control the availability of nutrients, biological functions, microbial
activity, and the behavior of chemicals.
3. Why is it that the pH of body fluids like blood remains virtually constant?
 The pH of blood in the arteries should be between 7.35 and 7.45 or virtually
constant for the body’s metabolic processes and other systems to work well.

4. Calculate the [H+] and [OH-] of a solution with pH 5.6

5. Calculate the pH of the buffer solution formed when 0.3M acetic acid (Ka = 1.8 x 10-5) is
added to 0.2M sodium acetate.
