classroom titled – “DNA,
Chromosomes & Genes PPT Notes
Sheet”

During the presentation, take notes to

help you understand the relationship
between the three. At the end, you will
be asked to draw a diagram showing
the relationship between DNA,
Chromosomes & Genes
Video #1
What is the relationship
between DNA, Chromosomes
& Genes?
1. Chromosomes are
found in the nucleus

2. Chromosomes are
made of DNA

3. Sections of
chromosomes are called
genes
What is DNA?

• Deoxyribonucleic Acid
• a molecule (atoms bonded
together) that carries our
genetic information
• They are in the nucleus of all
our cells
Video #2
What are CHROMOSOMES?
• A packet of coiled up DNA
• They are in the nucleus of our cells
• Humans have 23 pairs of
chromosomes
• In each pair, half is from the your
mother and the other half is from
your father. The two chromosomes
in a pair are called homologous
chromosomes.
What is a GENE?
• A part of a DNA molecule coded
specifically to create one
protein.
• Each DNA molecule contains
many genes.
• They are the basic physical and
functional units of heredity (the
instructions on how to create
YOU!!!)

END
Put it All Together!
1. On your piece of paper, draw and label a
diagram that shows DNA, a gene, and two
chromosomes and how they’re related to one
another.
2. From our conversation in class, why do
YOU think it is important we learn this
information BEFORE learning about the
processes of meiosis and mitosis?
3. Write your name on the top of your sheet
and place it on our class folder on the front
table.
