HISTORICAL
CONTEXT

“
On July 7, 1892, Ladislao Diwa, Teodoro Plata, Andres Bonifacio,
Jose Dizon, Deodato Arellano, and Valentin Diaz founded the KKK
or “Kataastaasang Kagalang-galangang n Katipunan ng mga Anak
ng Bayan”.
The “Kataastaasang Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan” (KKK) was a revolutionary society that espoused
independence and freedom for the Philippines through force of arms.
At first, only male are allowed to join, later on, women were able to
become part of it.
It was discovered in 1896 that resulted to Philippine Revolution .

The Kataastaasang Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga
anak ng Bayan (KKK) or Katipunan is arguably the most
important organization formed in the Philippine history.
While anti-colonial movements, efforts and organizations had
already been established centuries prior to the foundation of
the Katipunan, it was only this organization that envisioned:
• A united Filipino nation that would revolt against the
Spaniards,
• The total independence of the country from Spain.
5
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
In the conduct of their struggle, Katipuneros created a complex structure
and a defined value system that would guide the organization as a
collective aspiring for a single goal. This was the document called
"Kartilya ng Katipunan“, original title was (Manga Aral Nang
Katipunan ng mga A.N.B)
The Kartilya ng Katipunan acted as the guidebook for the organization's
new members, set out the rules and principles of the party. Emilio
Jacinto wrote the first edition of Kartilya on 1892. The revised
Decalogue was later published by Andrés Bonifacio. Originally named
'Katungkulang Gagawin ng mga Z. LI. B. (Duties of the People 's Sons).'
The Decalogue. It was never published because Bonifacio thought that
Kartilya of Jacinto was superior to what he had produced. 6
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
The word "Kartilya" comes from the word CARTILLA used
during the Spanish period: this is a small reading booklet for
those who want to start school children of the Spanish era.
The Kartilya of Katipunan is a small Pamphlet given to the
Katipunan member and to new members, it must be distributed
to the new member or incoming member so that they know the
standard of a Katipunero.
The Kartilya can be treated as the Katipunan's code of conduct.
It contains fourteen rules that instruct the way a Katipunero
should behave, and which specific values should be uphold. 7
KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
Generally, the rules stated in the Kartilya can be classified into
two. The first group contains the rules that will make the
members an upright individual and the second group contains
the rules that will guide the way he treats his fellow men.
Upon joining to be one of the Katipuneros, members are
required to read the Kartilya and cling to its code of conducts. To
change the Philippines for the better. Early Katipunero believes
that changing the way Filipino thought and acted was the most
important things to be considered.

KARTILYA NG KATIPUNAN
As a document written whose main purpose is to overthrow a colonial
regime, we can explain the content and provisions of the Kartilya as a
reaction and response to certain value systems that they found despicable
in the present state of things that they struggled against with.
Equality, tolerance, freedom and liberty were values that first emerged in
the 18th century French Revolution, which spread throughout Europe
and reached the educated class of the colonies. Jacinto, an ilustrado
himself, certainly got an understanding of these values. Aside from the
liberal values that can be dissected in the document, we can also decipher
certain Victorian and chivalrous values in the text.
