GLOBAL CITY
○ A global city refers to a major urban center that
plays a significant role in global economic,
cultural, and political affairs. These cities are
widely connected with other cities around the
world and serve as important hubs for
international business, finance, and commerce.
Global City
• The idea of "global city" emerged in the
social science literature in the 1980s.
The concept was preceded by the idea of
'world city'.
Through the global cities the nation-states
project their significance onto the global
stage.
→ Sociologist Saskia Sassen popularized the term
"global city" in the 1990's.
→ She initially identified three global cities: New
York, London and Tokyo.
→ New York has the New York Stock Exchange
(NYSE), London has the Financial Times Stock
Exchange (FTSE), and Tokyo has the Nikkei.
