What was the Amritsar Massacre, 1919

 Major riots had stared in Punjab after the Rowlatt ACT was passed
and Punjab was put under martial law
 On April 13, 1919, on the festival of Baisakhi, a crowd of non-
violent protestors had gathered
 General Dyer along with his troops open fired on the unarmed
crowd.

Causes
• Rowlatt Act passed in March 1919 by the Imperial Legislative Council
• Also known as the Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, 1919
• The act was passed by the Rowlatt Committee chaired by a judge, Sir Sidney Rowlatt
• Many freedom fighters and Nationalists were arrested after protesting against this
Act
What was the Rowlatt Act?
• This act authorised the British government to arrest anybody suspected of terrorist
activities. It also authorised the government to detain such people arrested for up to
2 years without trial.
