Examples:
 Invention/creation of new word.  Xerox

 Borrowing

 One of the most common process. Examples:

 Taking/borrowing words from other  Sofa(Arabic)
languages.  Yogurt (Turkish)
 Garage (French)
 Jungle (Hindi)
 Compounding

 Everyone can create compound

words.
Examples:
 Words are formed by joining or  Keyboard
adding two existing words.  Jellyfish
 Honeycomb
 Sunshine
 Breakfast
 Blending

 Initial part of a word is added to the latter Examples:

part of another word.
 Usually, the beginning of one word and the
 Internet
end of another word.  Motorbike
 Motel
 Blog
 Smog
 Clipping

 A multi syllabic word is reduced to a single

syllabic.
 New words are formed by shortening other
Examples:
words i.e. eliminating the initial part, the last
 Net
part or both the parts of an original word.  Ad
 Phone
 Exam
 Plane
 Backformation

 A new smaller word is derived by reducing Examples:

and changing the grammatical form of the  Education (N)-
original word. educate (V)
 A word of one type (usually a noun) is reduced
to form another word of a different type
 Promotion (N)-
(usually verb) or vice versa. promote (V)
 Donation (N) -
donate (V),
 revision (N) -
revise (V).
 Conversion

 Using same word for the different

grammatical forms of itself.
Examples:
 Using a word in new functions i.e. by shifting,  Butter (N)-To
changing or converting its original butter the bread
grammatical class to another class. without  Empty (A)- To
any change in its form or without changing its
empty the bin
form.
 Phone (N)- To
phone your
friend
 Acronyms

 Creating new words by bringing the initial Examples:

letters of a set, a group or a series of words  RADAR
and putting them together then pronouncing
them as a whole new word.
