Optics & Photonics

What is optics
• Optics is a branch of physics- describes the
behavior and properties of light and the
interaction of light with matter.
• Optics explain optical phenomena,
generation, propagation and detection of
electromagnetic radiation having wavelength
greater than X-ray and shorter than
microwave.

Optics? and Photonics?

 Different model of optics-

1) classical optics : failure to explain certain

behavior of light
• geometrical optics (ray optics)- light travel at
straight line
• physical optics
• wave optics

2) modern optic- quantum : eg: duality of light

Optics? and Photonics?

 Photonics is the applied version of optics.

 It involves the study of light energy and the
quantum study of photon.
 Photonics involves practical application of optics,
of which to develop devices that may serve as a
replacement to traditional electronics.

What is LASER?
LASER is stand for Light Amplification by
Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A device that
emit lights through a process of optical
amplification based on the stimulated emission
of photon.
Laser used for what?
• material processing (cut, drill, weld, heat-treat)
• medical (surgery, therapy, LASIK)
• graphic and printing
• military (weapon, finder & target designators)
• measurement and diagnostics (parameters)
