Nicanor Abelardo was a renowned Filipino
composer known for his contributions to
Filipino music during the early 20th century.
Born in 1893, he composed numerous art songs,
choral works, and zarzuelas (musical dramas).
About Nicanor Abelardo
Nicanor Abelardo (1893–1934) was a Filipino composer known
for his contributions to kundiman songs before the Second World
War. Born in San Miguel de Mayumo, Bulacan, he displayed musical
talent from a young age, mastering instruments like the guitar and
violin. Abelardo attended the University of the Philippines
Conservatory of Music, where he composed the university’s anthem,
“U.P. Naming Mahal.” His legacy includes over 140 compositions,
elevating kundiman to an art-song form. Notable works include
sonatas, concerti, and chamber music. Abelardo’s impact on
Philippine culture endures, making him a celebrated figure in the
country’s musical history .
