What is Third
Conditional?
The third conditional is a structure used for
talking about unreal situations or to talk about
regrets or disappointments in the past
Third conditional form

If + Past perfect, would + have + V3

Past perfect = S + had + past participle (V3)


Example

If clause, Main clause

If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam

Main clause if clause.


I would have passed the exam if I had studied hard

Fact: I didn’t study hard that’s why I didn’t pass the exam
Example
- If she had taken better care of herself,
she wouldn’t have got sick

- She wouldn’t have got sick if she had taken


better care of herself

Fact: she was sick because she didn’t take better care of herself
