DEFINITION
Definition of Preposition

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to

other words in a sentence.

It usually indicates the time, direction, place or

logical relationship of its object to the rest of the
sentence.

FUNCTION
 Function of Preposition
Preposition are used to connect preposition object with
the previous part of the sentence. In this case, the
preposition shows the relationship of the ideas stated in
the prepositional phrase with the idea stated in the
previous part of the sentence.

Example :
He owns the house on the corner
We are waiting for her

OBJECT
 Object of Preposition
1. Adverb as Object
Some adverbs of time or place can be used as object for preposition that
show the relationship of time or place.
Example :
• He has studied hard from then till now.
• My friends and I will meet at the restaurant
• He has been in the class since earlier
• My sister is reading the newspaper next to her.
 Object of Preposition
2. Expression as object
An adverb phrase ( an expression that does not end in a preposition or a
conjunction) can be used as an object for a preposition.
Example :
• She did not return till about a week afterwards.
• I think this decision is the best for us
• I just got good news from him.

3. A noun clause as an Object
An noun clause (a clause that does the work of a noun) can be the object of a
preposition in the same way as nouns and pronouns.
Example :
• My departure will depend upon whether I get leave or not.
• Thank my English teacher for how he taught me some tricks.
• He didn’t say anything during the trip.

PREPOSITION OF TIME
 Preposition of Time
At, on, for, and in often serve as prepositions of time.
We use at to designate specific times.

Examples :
• At : Meet me at five o’clock.
• On : I work all day on Saturdays.
• In : He likes to read in the evening.
• For : He worked for twenty years.
 Preposition of Time
• Ago : The dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago
• Since : Ahmad Marzuqi has gone since 13 o’clock.
• During : I will do that during the holiday next week
• By : She had promised to be back By five o'clock.

PREPOSITION OF PLACE
 Preposition of Place
At, on, and in can also serve as prepositions of place.
We use at for specific addresses.
Examples :
• At : I live at 12th Downing Street.
• On : I live on Legendary Lane.
• In : I live in Malir Cantt.

• Near : I lived near the market

• Next to : She sits down next to the handssome guy
• Around : Pine trees grew around the lake
• About : The dog was about the house
• Under : The cat is under the chair

 Preposition of Direction & Movement

The preposition to, toward, throught, into, and from is

used to express movement to a place.
Examples :
● To : I’m driving to work
● Toward : We were working toward a common goal.
● Trought : Are u afraid to walk throught the bridge alone?
 Preposition of Direction & Movement

• From : He comes from Mexico

• Into : The manager walked into the office
• Onto : To get onto a horse
• Up : The cat ran up the tree
• Aside : He moved his chair aside
• Down : The rock rolling down the hill

EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH OF
USING PREPOSITION
I'm now entering college, and I'm studying at UIN Salatiga. I lived
there like a normal student, away from my family and living
in a boarding house. My boarding house is on Jl. Merbabu
no. 56. I chose the boarding house because it was close to
my campus. And the place is strategic because it's next
to the city center. The number of students in my class
is quite a lot, namely 40 people. Among these students
there is one close friend of mine. His name is nafis.
Because nafis a friendly person when beside him
I feel happy. My goal is to graduate from college
in 3.5 years. So I'm going to study hard.
