BSME-2ND YEAR
TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION:
DETERMINANTS
A. SECOND AND THIRD ORDER DETERMINANTS
B. PROPERTIES OF DETERMINANTS
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this module, you must be able to:
1. State, illustrate, and apply the properties of
determinants
2. Evaluate the value of the second order and
third order determinants
DETERMINANTS
• It is a scalar calculated from a square matrix
• Every determinant can be associated with a real number

• This symbol is used as the compact form for algebraic sum of all the possible
products, each of which has n factors.
• Each element is characterized by two subscripts, the first indicating the row in
which the element appears, the second indicating the column in which the element
appears.
The second order determinant is defined
by:
SECOND ORDER: Example No. 1
SECOND ORDER: Example No. 2
SECOND ORDER: Example No. 3
The third order determinant is defined by:

To remember this algebraic sum, rewrite the first and second column and
observe the scheme of forming the elements for each product
THIRD ORDER: Example No. 1
THIRD ORDER: Example No. 2
