WHAT IS EARTHING ?

• Earthing is a process of discharge of

electrical energy takes place by transferring
charges directly to earth
through low resistance wire

This brings the body of equipment to

zero potential
and electric shock to operator is avoided
PURPOSE OF EARTHING

• To save human life from danger/shock/death by blowing fuse of

the leaky apparatus
• Too protect all machines fed from over headlines from lightning
• To protect large buildings from atmospheric lightning
• To maintain the line voltage constant
METHODS OF EARTHING

• Strip earthing
• the method of sending charges directly to
• the ground through low resistance wire to cause
an immediate discharge of electrical energy
Dimensions
Copper 25mm*1.6mm
GI 25mm*4mm
Depth is 0.5m
PLATE EARTHING
Earthing plate made of copper or G.I is buried into
the ground at a depth more than 3 metres
From the ground level
Dimensions of plate
Size of copper:-60cm*60cm*3.18mm
Size of galvanized iron :-60cm*60cm*6mm
Depth < 3m
PIPE EARTHING

• A galvanized steel perforated pipe is buried

vertically, connecting all the electrical conductors
to the ground where the depth of the pipe depends
on the soil conditions
• Dimensions :-
• Diameter 40cm
length 2.5m
Depth 3.75m
ROD EARTHING

• Dimensions :-
• Size copper 12.5 diameter
GI 16mm diameter
Length of rod used is greter than
2.5m
.Used in sandy soil
CONCLUSION

• The earthing system consists of a low impedance path

made up of conductors between metallic structures and the
earth
.earthing keeps the electrical appliances safe
