What is Agroforestry?

S - any sustainable land-use system that

maintains or increases total yields by combining
food crops (annuals) with tree crops (perennials)
and/or livestock on the same unit of land, either
alternate or at the same time, using management
practices that suit the social and cultural
characteristics of the local people and the
economic and ecological conditions of the area.
Agroforestry (ICRAF 1982)
Agroforestry denotes a sustainable land
and crop management system that strives
to increase yields on a continuing basis, by
combining the production of woody forestry
crops (including fruit and other tree crops)
with arable or field crops and/or animals
simultaneously or sequentially on the same
unit of land, and applying management
practices that are compatible with the
cultural practices of the local population.
Definition

• Agroforestry or agro-silviculture is a land use

management system in which trees or shrubs are
grown around or among crops or pasture land.

• It combines shrubs and trees in agricultural and

forestry technologies to create more diverse,
productive, profitable, healthy, ecologically sound,
and sustainable land-use systems.
1. To utilized the available farm resource
properly.
2. To maximized per unit production of food,
fodder, fuel.
3. To optimizing-biological and physiological
resource.
4. To maintain ecological balance.
5. To check soil erosion, conserve soil
moisture and increase soil fertility.
System of Agro - forestry

Agri-silviculture
Agri-Silviculture
When agricultural crops are grown in
combination with forest tree species, the
system is known as Agrisilviculture.
For instance, when ground nut and arhar are
grown as intercrop with Leucaena leucocephala
and Sesbania aegyptiaca.
This crop combination with forest trees results
in an increase in both grain as well as
fodder yields.
Sesbania spp
AGRISILVICULTURE
Plantation of fruit trees instead of
ornamental species.
 Alley cropping along walking trails.
 Plantation in forest edges.
 Having vines growing on recreational
structures.
 Creat better conditions for natural
productions.
