Fire protection

z
 Fire protection refers to the measures
and strategies put in place to prevent
and control the outbreak and spread of
fires.
 The goal of fire protection is to
safeguard human life, property, and the
environment from the destructive effects
of fires.
 This involves a combination of proactive
measures to prevent fires and reactive
measures to mitigate their impact when
they occur.
Fire protection equipment
z

Fire protection equipment

refers to various tools, devices,
and systems designed to
prevent, detect, control, and
suppress the spread of fire.

These equipment types play a

crucial role in ensuring the
safety of individuals, protecting
property, and mitigating the
impact of fires.
z Fire extinguisher

 A handheld active fire protection device

usually filled with a dry or wet chemical
used to extinguish or control small fires,
often in emergencies.

 extinguishers apply an agent that will cool

burning heat, smother fuel or remove
oxygen so the fire cannot continue to burn.
z
 Classes of Fire

Class A -Suitable for combustible materials such as

paper, wood, textiles and other similar materials.

Class B -Suitable for flammable liquids

Class C -Suitable for flammable gasses

Class F- suitable for cooking oil and fat.

E. Wet chemical
 specifically designed for cooking oil/fats fires.

SMOKE ALARM/
DETECTOR 
A smoke detector is a device that senses
the presence of smoke in the air and emits
an alarm to alert people about the potential
presence of a fire. The primary function of a
smoke detector is to provide early warning
in the event of a fire, allowing occupants to
evacuate the area and emergency
responders to be notified promptly.
z
WATER SPRINKLER  Water sprinkler systems use water to
suppress fires in buildings. The fire
sprinkler pump distributes the water via the
pipe-system and discharged by the
sprinklers. Fire sprinkler systems use water
to suppress and in best case to extinguish
fires in buildings.

 The primary function of a water sprinkler

system is to provide a quick response to a
fire, limiting its growth and spread.
z  An emergency light is a battery-backed
EMERGENCY LIGHT lighting device that switches on
automatically when a building experiences
a power outage.

 Their primary purpose is to guide people

safely to exits and ensure orderly
evacuation in case of fire, natural disasters,
or other emergencies.

 Emergency lighting is required wherever

the public has access to a building or
where people are employed.
 A fire blanket is a safety device designed to
z
FIRE BLANKET extinguish small fires or to provide a
protective shield for individuals in the event
of a fire.

 fire blanket is a sheet of woven fire-

resistant material designed to extinguish
small fires. Fire blankets are usually made
from woven fibreglass and work by
smothering the fire and cutting off its
oxygen supply.

 It is typically made of fire-resistant

materials and is intended for use in
emergency situations.
z
FIRE ALARM

 A fire alarm system is a crucial component

of fire protection and life safety in buildings.
Its primary function is to detect the
presence of fire or smoke and alert
occupants to evacuate, facilitating a rapid
response to the emergency.
z
 Heat detectors are fire detection devices
designed to sense elevated temperatures
HEAT or specific temperature thresholds. Unlike
DETECTOR smoke detectors that respond to the
presence of smoke particles, heat
detectors are activated based on heat
levels. They play a crucial role in fire
protection systems by providing early
warning of a fire in situations where smoke
detection might be less effective or prone to
false alarms.
z

FIRE BUCKET
 A fire bucket is a simple firefighting tool
designed to hold and transport a fire-
extinguishing agent, typically sand or water.
Fire buckets are often used in industrial
settings, construction sites, and other
environments where there is a risk of fires.
They provide a manual and immediate
means to suppress small fires before they
can escalate
 The fire hydrant is a very useful device for
z
FIRE HYDRANT fire fighting and extinguishing the fire
immediately. It is a connection that is
connected to the water supply source and
when a fire outbreaks the firefighter can
easily get the water by opening this
connection.
z
FIRE EXIT
DOORS  known as an emergency escape or panic
escape door, a fire exit door is primarily
installed to ensure safe and fast escape
from a premises in the event of an
emergency. The focus, therefore, is always
on the escape / exit element of the door
and not the entry.
z
SIGNAGE

 All fire equipment should be accompanied

by standard signage. This helps users
identify the location and type of equipment
they can access in an emergency. There is
a range of different regulations when it
comes to fire safety signage
z First Aid Kits

 A first aid kit is a collection of essential

medical supplies and equipment used for
providing initial care in the event of an
injury or illness. First aid kits are crucial for
addressing minor injuries, managing
medical emergencies, and promoting the
well-being of individuals until professional
medical help arrives.
z

Fire Hose Reels
A fire hose reel is a firefighting equipment
that consists of a cylindrical spindle, a
hose, a nozzle, and a valve assembly.

 Fire hose reels are commonly installed in

buildings and facilities to provide a quick
and accessible means of delivering water
for fire suppression.

 They are typically used to combat small

fires before they escalate and require more
extensive firefighting measures.
z
Fire Extinguisher Cabinet

 fire cabinet will keep your extinguisher safe

from the damage of the weather.
z

 tools that are essential equipment used by

Fire probing tools firefighters and first responders to
extinguish fires and investigate fire scenes.
Pushing/pulling tools are designed to
manipulate debris and objects, while prying
tools are used to gain access to restricted
areas.
z

Fire Helmet
 A firefighter’s helmet is used as a basic
personal protective equipment item. The
purpose of the helmet is to absorb a part of
mechanical impact acting towards the
rescuer’s cervical spine, which may lead to
its injury.
z

Fire Gloves

 Leather gloves shield firefighters’ hands

from flames, cuts, scratches, burns, and
blisters during firefighting.
z
Fire Hose Nozzles

 A fire hose nozzle is attached to the end of

a fire hose and directs the flow to a specific
target location. Fire hose nozzles are
available in a range of sizes, styles,
materials, and types
z
Flashlight

 Being able to see your surroundings clearly

is paramount to reducing the potential for
injury. Having a quality light that improves
your vision and situational awareness will
allow you to see objective hazards and
become more safer
