Chapter 1: BACK GROUND

(George Palkin, 2021)[5] in the article of mechatronic system for

automatic control that aimed at minimising cost during water supply

Effective water management is critical in various sectors, making it

necessary for the development of intelligent and automated systems for
pump control and water level regulation. It is important in various
industries and domestic applications.

The existing systems are very expensive and not affordable by

everyone ,this provides a need for construction of a relatively cheaper
system that will replace the existing systems that are expensive.
Problem statement

Due to increase in the population, change in weather conditions, people

being busy with work ,this makes it necessary for automation of the
already existing water pump system
And the fact that the existing control systems are very expensive , this
makes not affordable by low income earners.
For example in Kihumuro campus there is a problem of overflowing tanks
and this is because there is no automated system to monitor them
General objectives

• Simulation of an automatic water pump and water level control circuit,

Construction and testing of an automatic pump and water level control
system

Specific objectives

• (i)To minimise water wastages in the environment and costs.

• (ii)To minimise power running costs during water supply
• Project significance

This research project will aim at simulating and

constructing an automatic water pump and water level
control system at minimised cost.
Chapter 2: Literature review

Water level control systems

Research by Wang and li (2017. [1] provides insights into various water
level control technique
including float switches, ultrasonic sensors and pressure sensors
The integration of technology in water as exploited by Kim et al. (2021).
[2] offers a remote
monitoring capacities and real-time data analysis.
• Simulation models
Simulation plays a crucial role in designing and testing automatic
water systems. works by Garcia
and Rodrigues (2019).[3] highlights the significance of accurate
modelling for predicting system
behaviour.
Advances in simulation tools such as those discussed by Chen et al.
(2022).[4] contribute to the development of robotic control algorithms
by simulating diverse scenarios.
Simulation models are crucial in the design and validation of control
systems before actual implementation. Using simulation software such
as proteus, researchers can model the behaviour of the systems
• Chapter 3: METHODOLOGY

Here we will study the design and approaches that will be

in line with how the study will help solving problems of
water wastages, power wastages and also saving time

The following materials will be used in this research: 5 V

relay, LED bulbs, pump, switches, BC547 and BC548
transistors, diode, resistors, 555 timer IC, battery, bread
board, jumper wires and connecting wires.
• Methodology

• Simulation of an automatic water pump and water level

circuit
• This method will be used in simulating the system by
using Proteus so that the pump is switched ON and OFF
when there is no water in the tank and when the tank is full
respectively.
• ILLUSTRATION

• Methodology

• The system will consist of the following 555:

Timer IC, the relay, and the pump as shown in
fig 1.1. The pump is connected to both the
power source and the relay which acts as a
switch after receiving electric signals from the
555 timer IC.
• Methodology

Terminals from the 555 timer will be also connected to the

underground tank, the overhead tank and to the indicator
circuit. Thus the 555 timer IC will control the switching ON
and OFF of the pump via the relay and also the indicator
circuit as shown in fig 1.1.
The automatic switching on and off the pump in return saves
water wastages as the overhead tanks over flows also power
costs are minimized as the pump goes off when not in use .
