HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Colonel Buenaventura stands as one of those
nationalistic artist of the 20th Century
Before World War II Mirrored in his music was the aspiration of a
nation wanting to be free and struggling to find
its own identity. Lolo Tony's first composition
was strongly influenced by American culture
but his acquired knowledge of indigenous
music grew into a strong desire to create a
distinct Philippine music. That music would
also help describe the Filipino, and in so
doing. also hopefully inspire them to
confidently navigate their own way towards a
uniquely Filipino vision and sense of
nationhood.
