Evaluation
 Make a judgement about the value of something.
 Evaluations can be conducted on a wide range of things, including programs,
projects, products, services, people, and ideas.
 Purpose:
• to help us to make informed decisions about what is working well and what
needs improvement.
• to help us to identify areas where we can allocate resources more effectively and
achieve better outcomes.
Here are some examples of evaluation:
A teacher evaluating a student’s essay
A manager evaluating an employee’s performance
A product reviewer evaluating a new smartphone
A research team evaluating the results of a clinical trial
 A government agency evaluating the effectiveness of a new social program

 Evaluating others draft is providing feedback
to help writers improve their work.
When evaluating others’ drafts, it is important to be:

Objective: Avoid letting your personal biases or preferences influence


your evaluation.
 Respectful: Remember that you are evaluating the draft, not the
author. Be constructive and supportive in your feedback.
When evaluating other’s draft, it is important
to consider four key areas:
Clarity of idea
Appropriate choice of literary element
Appropriate use of the element
 Effective combination of the idea and the chosen literary element
Clarity of Idea
Does the draft clearly convey the author’s main idea?
Is the idea well-developed and supported with evidence?
 Is the draft organized in a logical way?
Example of evaluating a draft through the
clarity of idea:
 Good:
• The main idea of the draft is clear and concise. The author states the main idea
clearly in the draft and supports it with evidence throughout.

 Bad:
• The main idea of the draft is unclear. The author does not explicitly state the
main idea and the evidence is presented in a disorganized way.
Appropriate Choice of Literary Element
Did the author choose the appropriate literary element to convey their idea?
Is the literary element used in a way that enhances the meaning of the draft?
 Does the literary element fit the genre and tone of the draft?

 Good:
• The author uses a variety of literary elements to convey their idea in an
effective and engaging way. The elements are chosen carefully and enhance the
meaning of the draft.

 Bad:
• The author relies too heavily on one literary element. The element becomes
repetitive and does not add to the meaning of the draft.
Appropriate Use of the Element
Is the literary element used correctly?
Is the element used sparingly and effectively?
 Does the element avoid being cliché or overused?

 Good:
• The author uses the literary element correctly and sparingly. The element avoids
being cliché or overused.

 Bad:
• The author uses the literary element incorrectly. The element is overused or used
in a way that is confusing or misleading.
Effective Combination of the Idea and the
Chosen Literary Element
 Does the combination of the idea and the literary element create a powerful and
meaningful effect?
 Is the reader able to understand and appreciate the author’s intent?
 Does the combination of the idea and the literary element stay with the reader long
after they finish reading the draft?

 Good:
• The combination of the idea and the literary element creates a powerful and
meaningful effect. The reader is able to understand and appreciate the author’s intent.
 Bad:
• The combination of the idea and the literary element does not create a strong
effect. The reader is left feeling confused or unmoved.
Effective Evaluation Feedback
🔹 Effective evaluation feedback is:
1. Specific: Avoid general statements like “good job” or “needs improvement.”
Instead, provide specific examples of what the author did well and what they could
improve.
2. Actionable: Provide the author with concrete suggestions for how they can
improve their draft.
3. Focused: Focus on the most important aspects of the draft, such as the main
idea, organization, and use of literary elements.

effectively evaluate other’s draft and provide
them with helpful feedback.”
