PHILIPPINE HISTORIOGRAPHY:

1521-1898
I. Introduction

- Historiography comes from two


Greek words ίστορία and γραΦην,
meaning history and to write.

- Historiography formally refers to the


philosophy, method and history of
the writing of history.
- PERIODIZATION: 1521-1898: From the arrival of Ferdinand
Magellan in 1521 until the declaration of independence in 1898.

This could further be divided into the following:

- 1521-1565 – From the arrival of Magellan to the arrival of Legazpi.

- 1565-1599 - From the arrival of Legazpi until the Referendum of 1599

-1599-1719 – From the Referendum until the rise of the frailocracy

- 1719-1745 – From the rise of the frailocracy until the Agrarian Revolt

- 1745-1841 – From the Agrarian Revolt until the Cofradia Revolt

- 1841-1872 – From the Cofradia until the Execution of Gomburza

- 1872- 1898 – From the Gomburza to the Declaration of Independence
