ECOSYSTEM: Life Energy

Lesson Objective:

Differentiate the features of cellular

respiration and photosynthesis.
Explain how do plants manufacture their
own food.
Compose a graphic organizer showing the
features of respiration and photosynthesis.
Sources of Energy
 Almost all living things obtain energy either directly or
indirectly from the energy of sunlight captured during
photosynthesis( food making).
How Living Things Use Energy
From the Sun

Autotroph Directly

Heterotroph Indirectly

Heterotroph Indirectly
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis

In the process of photosynthesis, plants use

Sunlight, CO2, to
the energy with the presence of __________________ Water
make food.
 Carbon dioxide enters
the plant through
small openings on the
undersides of the
leaves called stomata.
Photosynthesis
During photosynthesis, plants and some other organisms use

energy from the sun to convert (change):

• carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O)

into

• oxygen (O2) and sugar (C6H12O6)

How do plants get the raw materials needed for
photosynthesis?

 The cell needs two raw materials :

water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

 Plantroots absorb water from the soil, and the

water then moves up to the leaves.
Photosynthesis
During photosynthesis, plants and some other
organism use energy from the sun to convert
carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and
sugars, including glucose.

Chloroplast
Cellular Respiration
-During photosynthesis, sunlight, carbon dioxide
and water are used to produce sugars and
oxygen.

-During cellular respiration, glucose (sugar

molecule) and oxygen are used to produce
carbon dioxide and water.

-Photosynthesis and cellular respiration can be

thought of as opposite processes .
Mitochondria
 Respiration needs two materials :
water (Oxygen-O2, and carbon dioxide-CO2
,sugar or glucose-C6 H12 O6)

 Cellular
respiration is the process which cells take the
energy from glucose to function.

 During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules

such as glucose and release the energy they contain.

Sequencing
 Sequence is the order in which the steps in a process occur.
Create a flowchart that shows the steps in photosynthesis.
Put each step in a separate box in the flowchart in the order
in which it occurs.

Steps in Photosynthesis

Sunlight strikes leaf.

Chlorophyll captures light energy.

Cells use the energy to produce sugars and oxygen

from water and carbon dioxide.
