DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND

CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Provide the answers on the following questions:

1. What is photosynthesis? What is the purpose of photosynthesis?

- Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light

energy into chemical energy that, through cellular respiration, can later be released
to fuel the organism's activities.

- Plants are autotrophs, which means they produce their own food. They use the
process of photosynthesis to transform water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide into
oxygen, and simple sugars that the plant uses as fuel. These primary producers form
the base of an ecosystem and fuel the next trophic levels

2. What is cellular respiration? What is the purpose of cellular respiration? What

living things uses cellular respiration?

- Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in
the cells of organisms to convert chemical energy from oxygen molecules or
nutrients into adenosine triphosphate, and then release waste products

- Cellular respiration is the process by which organisms (animals and plants) break
down sugar in the presence of oxygen in order to release energy in the form of ATP.
As a byproduct of this process, carbon dioxide and water are produced.

- Cellular respiration is the process by which organisms use oxygen to break down
food molecules to get chemical energy for cell functions. Cellular respiration takes
place in the cells of animals, plants, and fungi, and also in algae and other protists

3. Differentiate photosynthesis and cellular respiration in terms of cell structure

involved. Use a table in answering this.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS: RESPIRATION:

Cell Structures involved: Cell Structures involved:

 Occurs in cells containing  Takes place in the mitochondria

chloroplasts (thylakoid and stroma) and occurs in all living cells

Energy Requirement: Energy Requirement:

 Light as a source of energy  The glucose molecules serve as

the source of energy.

Raw materials: Raw materials:

 Carbon dioxide and water  Glucose and oxygen

End Product: End Product:

 Glucose and oxygen  Carbon dioxide, water, and ATP

4. What is the connection of the two processes? Explain the cycle.

- Photosynthesis makes the glucose that is used in cellular respiration to make ATP.
The glucose is then turned back into carbon dioxide, which is used in
photosynthesis. While water is broken down to form oxygen during photosynthesis,
in cellular respiration oxygen is combined with hydrogen to form water.
