The words “I love you” did not always express the
deepest feeling of a person can have toward
another.

I cherish thee.
Speech acts relate to actions done by saying them.

Speech Styles are patterns of speaking


characterized by distinctive pronunciation,
vocabulary, intent, participants, and grammatical
structures.

1. Intimate Style
-used between people who have very close relationship such as
family members, best friends, and couples.
-brings two already close people much closer to each other
-does not care about grammar or pronunciation

2. Casual Style
Conversation style used among friends
Uses a lot of trendy words and phrases
Speaks in incomplete or elided sentences
Uses of slangs
Does not need to be careful about grammar, pronunciation, or
choice of words

3. Consultative Style
Style in which speaker constantly observes the listener’s verbal and nonverbal cues for
feedback
Speaker does not know how much the listener knows about the topic
Speaker pronounces words well, chooses words carefully, and speaks in complete sentences
Speaker elaborates and explains well
Limited listeners
Closely connected to information as function of communication
Does not result in closeness between people

4. Formal Style
Does not matter how the participants’ relationship to each other
Requires careful attention to producing well-formed sentences
and to coherent, very logically-organized speech
Uses a lot of Latinism
Plans speeches in advance

5. Frozen Style
Very formal style
Exists as literature for a given community
