BRIEF HISTORY OF

VOLLEYBALL
• The game of volleyball, originally called “mintonette,”
was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan after the
invention of basketball only four years before.
• And was designed to be a combination of basketball,
baseball, tennis, and handball.
• Over the years that followed the rules of the sport were
further refined and standardized. In 1920 the rule
stipulating a maximum of three hits per team was
instituted.

6 Basic Skills in Volleyball
• The six basic volleyball skills are passing, setting, spiking,
blocking, digging, and serving.
• Passing is often thought of as the most important skill in
volleyball. The player performs a pass when s/he hits the ball
around the torso level - with forearms of the straightened arms.
The player moves arms unattached under the approaching ball,
stops and takes a well balanced and low passing position.

6 Basic Skills in
Volleyball
• The importance
of serving is often
undervalued. A serve is
used to put the ball into
play to start the volley.
The serve is the only skill
controlled solely by one
player.

6 Basic Skills in
Volleyball
• Blocking is a skill in volleyball used to prevent the
opponent from a successful attack hit. A block technique is
used to deflect the ball coming from an attacker. The
blocker is trying to block the ball back into the opponent's
court.
• Digging is another skill that
isn't focused on quite as
much as most skills in
volleyball. The job of
a volleyball digger is to
prevent the ball from hitting
the floor after being spiked
by the opposing team.
To dig,
the volleyball players must
anticipate the spike and be
prepared to quickly dive in
any direction.
• Setting is the tactical center of Volleyball. The "set" is an
overhead pass used to change the direction of the dig and
put the ball in a good position for the spiker. It is usually
the team's second contact.
Basics of volleyball positions on the court
• There are Six players, (three players on each of the zone.)
• Front row players are players who are allowed to block
the opponent and attack the ball in the attack zone.
• Back row players are players who play defense by
digging opponent’s attacks and attack the ball behind
attack.
• Players are rotating clockwise on the court after winning
the rally after the opponent’s serve.
