HISTORY OF FIBER OPTIC SYSTEMS

• In 1870, John Tyndall in England, demonstrated one of the first guided light systems.
• He performed an experiment in which water was used as a medium, to prove that the light
rays can bend.
• In 1880, Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated transmission of speech using a light beam,
which he called it as photophone.
• It worked on the principle of modulating sunlight with a diaphragm giving speech
transmission over a distance of 200m.
• Due to atmospheric turbulence, the problem with light transmission occurred and thus
restricted to the line of sight.
INVENTION OF LASER

• By 1958, scientists of Bell laboratory produced the theory of using LASER as the light
source.
• In 1960, the first LASER was actually operated.
• In 1962, the first semiconductor LASER was invented.
• LASER is a powerful coherent light source and it is also possible to modulate it in the
high frequency.
• Because of the low beam divergence, the enhanced free space optical transmission
became practically possible.
INVENTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF
OPTICAL FIBERS

• In 1966, the optical communication via dielectric waveguides or optical fibers made from
glass to avoid degradation of the optical signal by the atmosphere.
• During the following years, major advances were made in the quality of optical fibers and
semiconductor light sources.
• Alongwith the development of the fiber waveguide, the other optical components, which
would constitute the optical fiber communication system and which were compatible in
size with the optical fiber were developed.
