Fiber Optics

By Daniel Golinski

Fiber Optics

Early Designs

In 1854, John Tyndall showed that light

could be transmitted through water.

Although successful, it was very

inefficient

Fiber Optics

Piping Light

William Wheeling presented the idea

of light traveling throughout a house

Similar to plumbling
Originates from an electrical arc
producing light

Fiber Optics

Photophone

Alexander Graham Bell created a

phone which used sunlight bouncing
off of a mirror to send audio from one
point to another

Short distance
Cloudy days = No light to transfer

Fiber Optics

Fiber Optics Branching out

During the early 20th century, Fiber

Optics began to be used for
alternative uses

Fiber optics were used in surgery

operations to view different parts of
the body from the inside

Fiber optics were found to be useful as

small lights for medicine purposes

Although useful, these fiber optics

were only useful in short distances,
exceeding no longer than a meter or
two.

Fiber Optics

Fiber Optic Patent

Sept. 16 1924, John Baird and

Clarence Hansell patent a device that
transmits images through tubes using
light

First practical patent using fiber optic

technology

Obtained for use in early television

technologies

Fiber Optics

Advancements in the Technology

Laser Diodes(LD and LED)

Different light intensities

Wavelengths

850,1310,1550

Materials

Impure glass
Fused Silica
Cladding

Fiber Optics

Future

Fiber Optic Cables are being installed

worldwide for use in telephones,
television, and internet services

Military Communications are also

adapting to use with fiber optics due
to the reduction in interference

Attempts to improve the technology

even more are progressing to
eliminate even more light loss during
transmission
