A presentation on journal quality determining parameters, university ranking,
university admission procedure, and successful start-up story.

Presented by Presented to
Md. Riazuddin Rajib Kanti Roy
Roll: 170910 Assistant Professor
Session:2017-2018 Dept. of Nutrition and Food
Dept. of Nutrition and Food Technology
Technology, JUST. Jashore University of Science
and Technology.
1. Several ways to find out the quality and indexed journal.

Determinants of the quality of a journal:

 Impact Factor
 Total Citations
 Quartile (Q1, Q2, Q3)
 Cite score
 Publisher (ELSEVIER, Springer, PLOS, Oxford, Cambridge, Wiley, SCIENCE,
MDPI)
 Indexed database. (Web of Science, SCOPUS, PUBMED, SCIMAGIO, Google
Scholar, SCIE, SSCI, MEDLINE)
Impact factor:
Definition: The impact factor (IF) is a measure of the frequency with which the
average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. It is used to measure the
importance or rank of a journal by calculating the times its articles are cited.

IF of year

Number of citations in 2021 and 2020 are 263, 374 respectively,

Number of publications in 2021 and 2020 are 55, 49 respectively.

IF of 2022 is (637/104) = 6.125

H- Index:
Definition: The h-index is a number intended to
represent both the productivity and the impact of a
particular scientist or scholar, or a group of scientists or
scholars. The h-index is calculated by counting the
number of publications for which an author has been
cited by other authors at least that same number of times.

For instance, an h-index of 17 means that the scientist

has published at least 17 papers that have each been
cited at least 17 times.

5. University ranking methodology
Rankings can help us sort out which programs are considered the most selective and
prestigious. Many factors go into college rankings, including alumni donations and
how other institutions perceive them.
There are several ranking methods available now like QS world ranking of
universities, Times higher education world university ranking, academic ranking
of the world universities, etc.
Among them, THE (Times Higher Education) has been providing trusted
performance data on universities for students and their families, academics,
university leaders, governments, and industry, since 2004 .
The five scores in these categories for each ranked university are available under
“performance breakdown”.
This means that in addition to browsing universities by overall rank
or searching for a specific institution, we can sort the table by the five metrics to
make a decision based on particular priorities.

1. Teaching (the learning environment)-30%

2. Research (volume, income, and reputation)-30%
3. Citations (Research influence)-30%
4. International outlook (staff, students, research)-7.5%
5. Industry income (knowledge transfer)-2.5%
6. Brief admission procedure for MS
Step-1:
Gathering knowledge regarding the admission procedure through browsing social
media, articles, or websites. Especially, from the seniors who are already pursuing their
degrees abroad. Because it is pretty much easier and more reliable to get information
from their current departments and ongoing program.

In this way, we will be able to know

1. Which program is preferable for us?
2. How can we get the opportunity?
3. When do we apply for the upcoming session?
4. Which approach will be better suited for us like mailing a professor, writing SOP,
and collecting LOR?
Step-2: Make a short list of the
 Program ( scholarship),
 University and
 Professor.

Step-3: Mailing professors of different universities.

In the final year of graduation, we can search for professors from our area of
interest and start mailing to reach out to professors especially those who have
funding or grant for MS students in their lab.
Step-4: Collect required documents for the application.
Now it’s time to collect academic transcripts, collect letters of recommendation
(LOR) from your responsible academic supervisor and honorable teacher.
Simultaneously, we have to write down a statement of purpose (SOP) with
intense attention to reflect our knowledge, experience, desire, vision, goals, and
determination for the corresponding program which is going to apply.
Hence, SOP is a crucial parameter for getting admission because sometimes it
acts as a decisive factor to get funded admission from a bunch of applicants.
Step-5: Sit for the required standardized test
Start your GRE preparation from the final year of your graduation. As we know
GRE is one of the toughest exams in the world, to get a decent score on this exam
requires
regular practice and take several mock tests to beat the analytical section
especially
Verbal section and analytical writing part.
After taking the GRE, we sit for IELTS/ TOEFL exam as required for the
documentation of English language fluency. Since English is a foreign language to
us we need to get in touch and practice regularly to get a high band score in this
exam.
Step-6: Interview with the professor
After getting a positive response from a professor, he will give a schedule for
the interview. It can be held on skype, zoom, or google meet.
During this interview, the professor may ask about several matters like our
interests, knowledge, leadership skills vision, and weak and strong zone of our
academic achievement.
Probably it is the perfect time to impress the professor by giving a desired
response of the professor.
Step-7: prepared a well-decorated CV
After getting standardized test scores, academic CGPA, work experience,
and research experience ( if available) prepare a well-decorated CV for the
application procedure.

Step-8: Apply for MS admission

After getting a positive response from the professor, we will apply
centrally for admission to the university.
We will attach our required documents (SOP, LOR, Academic transcript)
with our CV and send these via courier service.
Step-9: Apply for a visa
After getting an admission letter from the university we will apply for the schedule of
visa interview. About a week later the embassy will confirm the schedule of the
interview.

Step-10: Visa interview

After getting the interview schedule, we will go to the embassy for an interview.
For a visa-winning interview, we have to prepare ourselves according to the
experience of our seniors.
Because we will have to express ourselves to the interviewer and convince them
with a very polite and straightforward answer to his/ her question.
Step-11: Approval of visa
After going through the proper interview and getting approval for a visa, we will
have to accomplish some tasks regarding shopping, and communicating with the
Bengali community who are already staying in these areas of the university and
territory.
These will help us a lot to manage a residence and living with the compatriot in
abroad.

Step-12: Get ready to fly

After collecting the required accessories, we will book a seat in the air to fly to the
country which I dreamed of.
Step-13: Ensure admission by submitting documents
After reaching the university, we will submit our required documents to
confirm our admission.
Let’s enjoy the life you dreamt of since the first year of your graduation.
Learn, travel, and explore your potential with multinationals and multicultural
people from overseas.
A fantastic story of a street food vendor
(fuska, cotpoti seller)
Location: In front of Govt. Momin girls high school, Paris road.
Name: MD. Abdur Razzak
Age: 26
Abdur Razzak first started his business at the age of 16. It’d have
been more than six years since he had done business on the edge
of Paris road. When he started his business, his monthly net
revenue was about 15 thousand BDT. But over the years, his
business has grown sharply; his monthly net earnings are about 70
thousand BDT. Now Abdur Razzak is a man with plenty of affluence
and property. Despite being a self-employed man, he leads a simple
and unpretentious life.
Indisputably, Abdur Razzak is an example setter to the young
generation, a torchbearer for the generation who makes us think
out of the box.
One evening at Doratan (a story of the routed sweet seller)

Location: Central Doratana mor

Name: Akram
Age: 35
Akram is a routed sweet seller at Doratan, in front of Voirob
Chattar. He is a business partner of his father. During the
sweet eating period, I talked to him about the starting and
history of his business. He shared almost everything
regarding his business. He admitted the ups and downs of
his business, especially at the time when they started it.
Information based on his statements suggests that his
business monthly revenue is almost 1.5 lac BDT.
Undoubtedly, it’s like an astronomic revenue from a street
food vendor. Doesn’t it? What do you think?
