- is the gradual
change in a
population’s genetic
and physical traits.
MELC 17
Explain how fossils records,
comparative anatomy, and
genetic information provide
evidence for evolution
OBJECTIVES
1.examine
. the fossil record as evidence of evolution;
2.determine the age of a fossil from fossil record ;
and
3.appreciate the importance of paleontologists in
citing evidences of evolution.
Fossils
-are remnants or
remains of ancient
organisms.
Fossils are formed from
remains of organisms which
were buried in layers of
sedimentary rocks due to
catastrophic events and
natural geologic processes.
Do you know the different
types of fossils?
Categories of Fossil Types
Trace Fossil
Any indirect evidence left
by an organism.
Footprints, burrows and
fossilized feces are trace
fossils.
Categories of Fossil Types
Molds and Cast
An impression of
organism. A cast is a mold
filled with sediments.
Categories of Fossil Types
Replacement
The original material of an
organism replaced with
mineral crystal that can
leave detailed replicas of
hard or soft part.
Categories of Fossil Types

empty fore spaces are
filled in by minerals such
as petrified wood.
