2.Listen attentively while the teacher or someone is
talking.
3.Raise your hand if you want to answer and avoid
answering in chorus.
4.Be honest and avoid cheating.
5.Be responsible for your learnings.
COMBINATION LOCK
Activity: Let’s try!

 I am going to ask you to unlock the combination lock.

HINT: the 3 digits that will lead to the possible code are 1, 5, and 8.
What are the possible codes that you have?
185 581 815 158 518 851

 There are 6 possible arrangements of the digits.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the lesson, 80% of the students will be

able to:
1. illustrate permutations of the distinct objects
2. derive the formula for finding the number of
permutations of n objects taken r at a time, n ≥ r; and
3. solve real life problems involving permutation.
PERMUTATIONS AND
COMBINATIONS

PERMUTATION

 Refers to any one of all possible arrangements of things. And that is

PERMUTATION
 An arrangement or listing in which order or placement is important is
called a permutation.
 For instance, given a set of distinct objects, we can arrange them in
several ways. Like what we did with the possible arrangements of the
3-digit code. The listed arrangements are what we called __________.

1. T, V, W, taken two at a time. What are the possible answers?
TV VT TW WT VW WV

2. A close friend invited Anna to her birthday party. Anna has 4 new blouses (stripes, with
ruffles, long-sleeved, and sleeveless) and 3 skirts( red, pink, and black) in her closet reserved
for such occasions. How many blouse-and-skirt pairs are possible?
LET’S FIND OUT.

 The possible pairs of blouse-and-skirt are 12 pairs

PERMUTATION

Now, how we are going to find the number of

permutations of distinct n objects taken r at a time?
 *n is the number of objects and r is the number of
how many objects will be taken at a time.

 The manager of a coffee shop needs to hire two employees,

one to work at the counter and one to work at the drive-
through window. Sara, Megen, Tricia, and Jeff all applied
for a job. How many possible ways are the manager to

There are 12 different ways for the 4 applicants to hold the 2
positions. In the previous example, the positions are in specific
order, so each arrangement is unique.

The symbol or denotes the number of permutations when arranging

4 applicants in two positions.
You can also use the Fundamental counting Principle to determine the
number of permutations.
PERMUTATION
Life is full of permutations and combinations.
Sometimes the order you do things matters
sometimes it doesn’t, but in order to find the
solution in life you must work through each
possibility presented to find your opportunity.”
