Pre-assessment-

What are the effects of force on an object?

Learning Objectives:

 Examine the concept of pressure in solids and

develop its formula to relate it to force and area.
 Apply the formula of pressure and solve related
problems.
Activity-(10 min)

Find out the pressure exerted by given

objects. Tabulate necessary data to find it
out.
My challenges:

Task I- If we increase the area, what will happen to the pressure?

Task II- A solid exerts a force of 500 N. Calculate the pressure exerted on the rectangular surface
where the length is 500 cm and width is 400 cm.

Task III- Why it is easier to walk on soft sand if we have flat shoes rather than shoes with sharp
heels (or pencil heels)?

Task IV- The pressure of a gas contained in a cylinder with a movable piston is 300 Pa. The area
of the piston is 0.5 m2. Calculate the force that is exerted on the piston.
