MASS IN MOTION
MOMENTUM
and
IMPULSE
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be
able to:
1. Identify factors that affect momentum;
2. solve problems involving momentum;
3. relate and describe momentum and impulse
to collision of objects, and
4. cite real-life examples of momentum and
impulse.
WHAT is MOMENTUM?
Momentum can simply be
defined as the mass in
motion. This tells us that
object at rest has no
momentum.
TWO QUANTITIES INVOLVE:
1. Mass
2. Velocity
These quantities are
directly proportional to
the magnitude of momentum.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The momentum (p) of a body is
the product of its mass (m) and
its velocity (v)
p = mv
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING
HAS GREATER MOMENTUM?
A. Passenger boat A travelling from
Lakandula Port with 35 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.
B. Passenger boat B travelling from
Lakandula Port with 45 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-

B. Passenger boat B travelling from
Lakandula Port with 45 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.
LET’S EXPLAIN!
The two passenger boats
travel at the same velocity
but passenger boat B has more
passengers thus it has
greater mass and momentum.
Another Situation!
A. One Monday morning, Eric is riding a
motorcycle going to Placer National High
School from his home in Magsaysay
travelling at a velocity of 5 m/s.
B. After school, Eric rode a motorcycle
from school to his home in Magsaysay
travelling at a velocity of 10 m/s.

B. After school, Eric rode a motorcycle

LET’S EXPLAIN!
The two motorcycle has the
same mass but motorcycle from
situation A has greater
velocity thus it has a
greater momentum.
p= mv

These quantities are

directly proportional to the
magnitude of momentum.
Calculate the momentum
of a 200 kilogram object
travelling at 15 m/s to the
east.
p = (200 kg) (15 m/s)

values.
STEP 1: Identify what is required
You are asked to calculate the
object’s momentum.
STEP 2: Identify the given
Mass= 200 kilograms
Velocity= 15 m/s
STEP 3: Write the working equation

p = mv
STEP 4: Substitute the given values

p = (200 kg) (15 m/s)

STEP 5: Find the answer

p = 3,000 kg•m/s

p = (200 kg) (15 m/s)

By derivations from the formula of momentum, we can
have the following formulas:
LET’S SOLVE THIS!!!
1. An 8 kilogram ball is rolling in a straight
line towards you. If its momentum is 16
kg.m/s, how fast does it travels?
2. A beach ball is rolling in a straight line
towards you at a speed of 0.5 m/s. its
momentum is 0.25 kg.m/s. what is the
mass of the beach ball?
HOW CAN YOU STOP OR CHANGE
THE MOMENTUM OF AN OBJECT?
COLLISIONS
IMPULSE
When an object slows down
or speeds up, its velocity
decreases or increases. If
there is change in the mass
or the velocity of an object,
there is also a change in
momentum and that is an
IMPULSE.
IMPULSE
The force (F) multiplied by
the time of contact (t) is
known as impulse (I)

I= Ft= p= mv
LET’S INVESTIGATE!!!
Suppose you are riding a
bicycle going to school in
Placer National High School.
You came across a motorcycle
and you managed to avoid it
but you lose your balance. You
have two options to collide
with, a mango tree and a
banana stalk. What will you
choose? And why?
For instance, we want
to find the Force of the
impact:

Ft = mv
F = mv/t
Increasing the force results in the
increase in the change of momentum
and decrease in the time of impact.
Just like how the bananas stalk
increases the time of impact when the
bike collides to it resulting for the force
of impact to be lesser causing for the
collision to create less damage on the
bicycle.
Just like in the concept
of dropping an egg to
the floor and to the
pillow.

What will happen to

the egg if it drops to
the floor? To the
pillow?
How important is momentum and
impulse? How, where, when to use
momentum and impulse?
APPLICATION of the TOPIC
The importance of
momentum and impulse
can be vividly observed in
the dynamics of a baseball
pitch.
PITCHING
MECHANICS
When a pitcher winds up and
throws the ball, they generate
momentum by pushing off the
rubber with their legs, rotating
their torso, and extending their
arm forward. This momentum is
transferred to the ball as it
leaves their hand.
IMPULSE AND
SPEED
The force exerted on the ball by
the pitcher's hand over a short
period of time (impulse)
determines the ball's acceleration.
This is why pitchers focus on
generating a strong impulse by
snapping their wrist and releasing
the ball with proper timing.
Hitting Dynamics
Batters use their own momentum
to generate power when hitting
the ball. The collision between the
bat and the ball involves a
transfer of momentum, with the
goal of redirecting the ball's path
with enough force to send it into
play or beyond the outfield fence.
WHAT ELSE?
Another practical application of
momentum and impulse in a real-life
setting can be seen in the design
and safety features of vehicles,
particularly in the context of
automotive collisions.
When the cars crash, the forces involved cause changes in
momentum, which can lead to severe damage and injury if not
properly managed. Here's how momentum and impulse come
into play:
Seatbelt Design
Seatbelts are designed to
increase the time over which a
person's momentum changes
during a collision. By extending
the duration of the collision,
seatbelts reduce the force exerted
on the occupants, thus
decreasing the risk of injury.
Airbag Deployment
Airbags deploy rapidly during a
collision to increase the time over
which the momentum of the driver
or passenger changes. This
extension of time reduces the
force exerted on the individual,
mitigating the risk of severe
injuries like whiplash or head
trauma.
Collision Avoidance Systems
Advanced driver assistance
systems (ADAS) utilize momentum
and impulse principles to predict
and mitigate potential collisions. By
detecting obstacles and applying
brakes or adjusting steering
automatically, these systems can
reduce the severity of collisions or
prevent them altogether.
In this real-life application, understanding momentum and
impulse helps engineers design safer vehicles and implement
effective safety features to protect occupants during collisions.
What are the factors that affect momentum?
Velocity and mass
What is the difference between momentum and
impulse?
Momentum is simply mass in motion while
impulse is simply the change in
momentum of an object. The change in
momentum happens when there is
collision.
What is the formula to solve momentum?
p = mv
How about the formula for impulse?

I= Ft= p
