d
s x t
WHAT IS SPEED?
How far you travel in a certain time
Speed is a scalar quantity that usually refers to “how
fast an object is moving”.
We call the result “the average speed”
AVERAGE SPEED is the measure of the distance
travelled in a given period of time. Average Speed is
sometimes referred to as the ration of distance and time.
We can use this to find any one
thing
IF we know the other two! d
By covering up what
you want s x t

A TRAIN TRAVELS 120 MILES IN 2
HOURS
WHAT IS ITS AVERAGE SPEED?
s = 120 ÷ 2 Speed = d
s = 60 mph t

CAR TRAVELS 40KM IN 20 MINUTES.
WHAT IS ITS AVERAGE SPEED IN KPH?
s = 40 ÷ 1/3 Speed = d
s = 120kph t

A windsurfer travelled 28 km in 1 hour 45 mins.
Calculate his speed.

Answer: His speed was 16 km / hour

1. If car travels 100 kilometers in 2
hours and 30 minutes, find the average
speed in kph?
2. A world-record holder ran 800
meters in 20 seconds. What was his
average speed?
Calculate the speed.
1. 100 km in 2 hours
2. 200 meters in 8 minutes
3. 224 kilometers in 4 hours
4. 120 kilometers in ½ hour
5. 840 words in 20 minutes
