Lesson Plan

In
MATHEMATICS VI

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of rate and speed, and of
area and surface area of plane and solid/space figures.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to apply knowledge of speed, area, and
surface area of plane and solid/space figures in mathematical
problems and real-life situations.

I. Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students should be able to
Calculates speed, distance and time M6ME-IIIg-17

II. Subject Matter:

Topic : Measurement Speed, Distance and Time
References: 21st Century Mathletes, p.100-102, SLM, ADM
Materials: Mathletes 6 textbook, videoclip, power point presentation
Valuing: Imagine what would the roads be like if all the drivers do not have the
knowledge about speed, distance, and time?
III Procedure:

A. Preliminary Activity
Greetings
Prayer
Attendance
Drill: Directions: Evaluate the following expressions to find the value of x. Write
your answers on a sheet of paper.
1. 8x = 64
2. x – 24 = 12 + 4
3. 5x – 12 = 13
4. 10x + 2 = 5x + 27
5. 5x – 8 = 15 + 22

Review: Find the value of a in the following equations where r = 45, s = 5.

Write your answers on a sheet of paper.

1. a = rs 4. 9a = rs
2. a = 𝑟/𝑠 5. 𝑎/2 = 𝑟/𝑠
3. 5a = rs

Motivation: (Show a short clip video about traveling out of town)

Ask: What is the most faraway place you have been to? Do you
know how far it is? How long did you travel? Do you know the
speed at which your vehicle traveled? Have you noticed that
when the speed of the vehicle is faster, the time it takes to
reach a place is lessened?

Presentation: (Present the problem below)

We had a family vacation in Tagaytay. My father drove our van from

City of Malolos Bulacan to Tagaytay City at an average speed of 55 kilometers per
hour, for a total of 4 hours. How far did we travel?

Let the pupils analyze the problem. Then find the answer.

• To find the total distance traveled, we simply multiply the given speed and time.
Distance = speed x time
= 55 x 4
= 220 km Answer: We traveled 220 kilometers
Discuss the relationship between speed, distance and time can be expressed in the
ff. equations:

An easy way to remember the distance, speed and time equations is to put the
letters into a triangle. The triangles will help you remember these 3 rules:

Distance = Speed x Time

Time = Distance/Speed
Speed= Distance/Time

Example 2: Calculate the distance that you will travel if you will drive for 3.5
hours at 75km/h.
Solution: D = S x T

= 75 km/h x 3.5 h Answer: You will travel a distance

Distance = 262.5 km. of 262.5 kilometers.

Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving

Example 1: Find the speed when, distance is 126 km and time is 7 hours.

Answer: The speed is 18km/h.

𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 18𝑘𝑚𝑝ℎ

Example 2: A car travels 120 km in 2 hours; find the speed of the car.

Answer: The car travels 60km/h.

𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 60𝑘𝑚/ℎ

Example 3: Samuel can type 975 words in 25 minutes. Calculate his typing speed
in:
A. words per minute B. words per hour

His typing speed can be calculated as:

A. Typing Speed

B. In 1 hour we have 60 minutes, so:

Typing Speed = 39 x 60 = 2,340 words per hour.

Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an action,

process, or condition exists or continues.
Example 1: A bus traveled 252 kilometers at 72 km/h. How long does it travel?

Solution:

Answer: The bus traveled for 3.5 hours.

𝑡 = 3.5 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

Example 2: How long does it take to travel 180 kilometers at 45 km/h?

Solution:

Answer: It takes 4 hours to travel 180km.

𝑡 = 4 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

Generalization:

What is Speed?
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving
What is Distance?
Distance is the total length between two positions.
What is Time?
Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an
action, process, or condition exists or continues.

Application:
Directions: Complete the table below. Write your answers on your Math NB.
No. Speed Distance Time
1 45kph 135 km
2 100 m 5 seconds
3 90 kph 3 hours
4 350 m 35 seconds
5 56 kph 7 hours
