National Vitamin A Program (NVAP)

was begun in 1993.

 By 2002, it's coverage became nationwide. The Ministry of Health
and Population conducts two-day nationwide campaign to administer
Vitamin A supplements and deworming tablets to children under 5
years of age on Tuesday and Wednesday.
 Ministry aims to administer Vit. A supplement to over 2.75 million
children aged between 6 months to 5 years. Over 2.4 million
children above 12 months will be given the deworming tablets.
 It is estimated that this has reduced deaths among children under
five by 23%. The campaign is conducted by Female Community Health
Volunteers ( FCHVs), twice every year in April and in October.
