With financial and technical assistance from USAID and
UNICEF , Nepal’s National Vitamin A Programe (NVAP) began in 1903 with the following objectives :
1. Reduce child mortality and morbidity through
prophylactic supplementation of children 6-59 months with high dose ( 200,00 IU) vit-A capsules twice yearly in all 77 districts. 2. Bring about behavior change to increase dietary intake of Vit-A and improve breast-feeding in the all districts.
3. Treat xerophthalmia , severe malnutrition , prolonged
diarrhea , and measles in all 77 districts.
4. Deworming all preschool and school age children
(enroll and non-enrolled) between the ages of 12-59 months through the platform of school and health centers in order to improve their overall health , nutritional status , access to education and quality of life. 5. Deworming tablets distribution to the children aged 12-59 months aiming to reduce childhood anemia with control or parasitic infestation through public health measures.
6. Increase awareness of importance of vit-A
supplementation.
7. Strengthen the use of the vit-A Treatment protocol.
