Noli Me Tangere

- "Noli Me Tangere" is a
novel written by Filipino
national hero, Dr. Jose
Rizal. Published in 1887,
the novel addresses the
social, political, and
cultural issues prevalent
in the Philippines during
the Spanish colonial
period.
Crisostomo
Ibarra

The protagonist of the novel, Crisostomo


Ibarra represents the idealistic and
enlightened Filipino educated abroad. His
return to the Philippines symbolizes the
hope for positive change and progress.
María Clara
Maria Clara is the daughter of
Capitan Tiago and represents the
idealized Filipina woman of her
time—devoutly religious,
obedient, and virtuous. Maria
Clara's tragic fate reflects the
suffering endured by women
under oppressive social norms
and patriarchal structures.
Elias
Elias is a mysterious and enigmatic figure
who becomes a close ally of Crisostomo
Ibarra. Elias serves as a voice for the
downtrodden and embodies the resilience

friar who serves as the parish
priest of San Diego. He is
portrayed as ambitious and
manipulative, using his position to
advance his own interests and
settle personal vendettas.
Don Rafael
Ibarra
Don Rafael Ibarra is Crisostomo
Ibarra's father and a wealthy
landowner. His unjust death at the
hands of the colonial authorities
serves as a catalyst for
Crisostomo's quest for justice and
reform.
Dona Victorina

A Filipina who aspires to be


European, Dona Victorina is
depicted as someone who is
ashamed of her Filipino heritage
and constantly seeks validation
from the colonial masters. She
represents the Filipinos who
collaborate with the colonial
powers for personal gain.
Crispin and
Basilio
•Sisa's sons, Basilio and Crispin, are
victims of abuse and exploitation. They
represent the innocence of youth and the
vulnerability of the oppressed under
colonial rule.
Sisa

A tragic character in the novel,


Sisa is a poor mother who loses
her sanity after her two sons,
Crispin and Basilio, are unjustly
accused and abused. She
represents the suffering of the
masses under colonial oppression.
