Design of Smart Flexible
Pavement By Using Geo-Textile, Tyre And Plastic Waste

@official_pranav_700
INTRODUCTION

Now-a-days disposal of different wastes produced from different Industries is a

great problem.
The use of four wheeler, two wheeler vehicles etc, is increasing day by day.
 As a result amount of waste tyres also increasing.
It is estimated that about 60 percent of waste tyres are disposed via unknown
routes in the urban as well as rural areas.
The waste tyres can be used as well sized aggregate in the various bituminous
mixes. If it is cut in the form of aggregate and can be called as rubber aggregate.
The waste plastic and its disposal is a major threat to the environment, which
results in pollution and global warming.
The utilization of plastic waste in bituminous mixes enhances its properties and
also its strength. Addition of plastic waste in construction of pavements reduces
the plastic shrinkage and drying shrinkage. @official_pranav_700

OF PAVEMENT

Rigid Pavement:

@official_pranav_700
Flexible Pavements

• Flexible pavement can be defined as the one consisting of a mixture of Asphaltic or Bituminous
material and aggregates placed on a bed of compacted granular material of appropriate quality in
layers over the subgrade.
• Water bound macadam roads and stabilized soil roads with or without asphaltic toppings are
examples of flexible pavements.

Rigid Pavement

• A rigid pavement is constructed from cement concrete or reinforced concrete slabs

• The design of rigid pavement is based on providing a structural cement concrete slab of sufficient
strength to resists the loads from traffic.
• The rigid pavement has rigidity and high modulus of elasticity to distribute the load over a
relatively wide area of soil.
• In the design of a rigid pavement, the flexural strength of concrete is the major factor and not the
strength of subgrade.

MATERIALS
&
LAYERS OF ROAD

Materials

• Gives the information about experimental study of materials used in flexible pavement.

• This describes the detail study of the measurements of Physical properties of bitumen mix such as
Ductility, Penetration, Softening Point, Flash Point and Fire Point.

• Also, the strength properties of Aggregates such as impact value, crushing value and abrasion value.

• In this study, an approach made to understand the improved properties of flexible pavement materials by
using waste plastic, crumb rubber and geotextile.

• Material is very important for road construction. @official_pranav_700

 GEOTEXTILE

• Geotextiles, a newly emerging field in the civil engineering and other fields, offer great potential
in varied areas of applications globally.

• Geotextiles play a significant part in modern pavement design and maintenance technique.

• Geotextiles are ideal materials for infrastructural works such as roads, harbors and many others

• These early geotextiles were made of natural fibers, fabrics or vegetation mixed with soil to
improve road quality, particularly when roads were made on unstable soil.

• Only recently have geotextiles been used and evaluated for modern road construction.

Function of geotextiles

• Geotextiles have four main functions in pavements:-

a) Separation
b) Drainage
c) Filtration
d) Reinforcement

• The primary function of geotextiles in stabilizing the subgrade is separation.

@official_pranav_700
1. Separation:

• Inserting a flexible porous geo-synthetic will keep layers of different sized particles separated
from one another.

• Geotextiles provide a separation layer between the aggregate and the sub grade soil, to prevent
migration of fines and thus indefinitely preserve the original aggregate structural thickness

@official_pranav_700
2. Drainage:

• Geo-synthetics allow the passage of water either downward through the geo-synthetic into the
subsoil or laterally within the synthetic material.

@official_pranav_700
3. Reinforcement:

• The geo-synthetic can actually strengthen the earth or it can increase apparent soil support.

• For example, when placed on sand, it distributes the load evenly to reduce rutting.

• Geotextiles are used in reinforcement through mechanisms of restraint or confinement, friction,

membrane effect and local reinforcement.

Classification of Geotextiles

Geotextiles are classified based on the method of production as

1. Non-woven fabric

2. Woven fabric

Installation

• The materials stabilize stone bases the four basic steps involved in placing geotextiles.

1. Sub-grade preparation

2. Geotextile placements

3. Aggregate placements

4. Aggregate compaction

Discussion
&
Conclusion
• Plastic coating on aggregates is used for the better performance of roads.

• The polymer coating also reduces the voids.

• The waste likes plastic and tire crumbs which are very difficult to dispose it off or are not easily
decomposable are getting efficiently reused.

• Due this approach the eco-friendly environment is being created.

• The life of flexible pavement increases up to 6-7 years more than that of the conventional bitumen
pavement.
