Rods and Cones

● Photoreceptors are end organs of vision which transform light
energy into visual impulse.
layer)
Cones contain visual pigment Cone opsins & depending on their exact structure
of opsin molecule, are maximally sensitive to either
● Long wavelengths of light(red light)
● Medium wavelengths - green light
● Short wavelength - blue light
There are the basis of colour perception in our visual image
Inner segment- outer segment junction
● The IS OS line is at the junction between the photoreceptors outer & inner
segments.
● Disruption of the line has been demonstrated to correlate with retinal function
loss in several retinal disorders.
● Therefore,, it is considered as an useful indicator of photoreceptor integrity &
predictor of visual function.
Inner segment/outer segment junction
● A reflective strip represents the junction between Inner and outer
segments of photoreceptors.

● Localized lesions in IS-OS junction

- Acute retinitis
- Acute retinal pigment epithelitis
- Mutlifocal choroiditis
- Punctate inner choroidopathy
- Multiple evanescence white dot syndrome
- Birdshot chorioretinopathy
- Serpiginous choroiditis
● In case of localized lesions affecting the photoreceptors, this
band may be disrupted, segmented or totally absent.
Sometimes the lesion is limited or appears as a focal disruption
of hyper reflective line.

● After some time ,the alterations of junction leads to decrease in

thickness of the outer nuclear layer& indicates damage to
photoreceptor cells.

● Preservation of the junction between inner & outer segments of

photoreceptors appears to be the key factor to visual recovery
after successful repair of RD involving macula
