PROBABILITY OF

DEPENDENT EVENTS

INSPIRED BY
Learning objectives:
Illustrate dependent events.
Solve the probability of
dependent events .

Appreciate the importance of

probability of dependent
event through decision
making.
Dependent Events
Two events are dependent if the occurrence of
the first affects the occurrence of the second so
that the probability is changed.

Example:
1. Studying hard getting a high grade.
2. Eating a lot, gaining weight.
3. Playing computer games, submitting all
assignment on time.
Probability of dependent event.
If A and B are dependent events, then
𝑃(𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝐴) ∙ 𝑃(𝐵/ 𝐴) or
𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝐴) ∙ 𝑃(𝐵/ 𝐴)
where: P(B/A) read as
“probability of B following A” means the
probability of B given that A occurred already.

A class is composed of 10 boys and 15 girls, If two presentors to a poem recital are to
be chosen in succession, What is the probability that the first is a boy and the second
is a girl?
Solution:
Sample space{10+15}
n(s)=25
The event are dependent because the student cannot be chosen twice, thus
P(boy, girl)= P( boy)∙P(girl and boy)
P(boy) = P(girl/boy)=
P(boy, girl)= P (boy)∙P(girl/boy)

Example 2:
A bag contains 4 blue, 3 white and 5 red
marbles. Two marbles are drawn without
replacement. Find the probability that the first
ball is red then the second is blue.
LET’S DISCOVER!
n(S)=12
P ( red) =
P(red then blue) =
P ( A and B) = P(A)∙P(B/A)
P ( red and blue)= P( red) ∙P(blue/ red)
= ∙=
Tell whether the following pairs of events are independent or
dependent. Write IE if the two events are independent and write
DE if the events are dependent events.
1. Reviewing your Math lessons for your Math examination and
getting 90 as a grade in the examination.
2. Preparing a very viable business proposal and getting a
closed deal with the investors.
3. The skies went dark and then a piece of chalk fell.
4. Raining cats and dogs and candles melting.
5. 5. Brown out occurred and then the room went dark.
1. Mr. Armando craved a chocolate, so he decided
to buy a box of chocolate in 7 eleven in Calbiga,
Samar. A box of chocolates contains ten milk
chocolates, eight dark chocolates, and six white
chocolates. Lance randomly chooses a chocolate,
eat it, and then randomly chooses another
chocolate. What is the probability that Lance
chooses a milk chocolate and a dark chocolate?
Car Rental Company has seven white vans, five
gray vans, four black vans and two blue vans. Hans
needs two vans with succession for a field trip to
lulugayan, Calbiga Samar . What is the probability
that Hans will choose a white van first , and the
second is a black van, ?
Think- pair and share
Find a partner and then answer the following in a ½ sheet
of paper.
Twenty-five balls numbered from 1 to 15 are
placed in a jar, and two ball is randomly selected
with succession. What is the probability that the
numbered ball chosen is
a. prime number and multiple of 5?
b. odd and multiple of 3?
c. divisible by 5 and the numbered ball is even?
Read and analyze each statement carefully.
Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write
your answer on ½ sheet of paper.

1. It refer to the occurrence of one event

affecting the probability of another event.
a.Dependent events
b.Inclusive Events
c. Independent events
d. Mutually Exclusive events
2. Which of the following is an example of an dependent
events?
a.6 followed by a 2 turning up in rolling a die twice.
b.Drawing a Jack of clover first and then a queen of hearts
in the second draw without replacement.
c. Selecting a male and a female from a class of 50
students to attend a symposium.
d. Drawing a black marble first and followed by a white
marble from a bag that contains three black and four
white marbles.
3.A bag contains 7 blue, 5 white and 8 red marbles. Two
marbles are drawn without replacement. Find the probability
that the first ball is red then the second is blue.
A.2/19 B. 3/20 C. 5/63 D. 11/51

4. A jar contains four blue balls, and 3 red balls.

Two balls are drawn at succession from the jar, one at a
time without replacement. Find the probability that the first
drawn ball is blue and the second ball is red.
A. 2 /9 B. 2/7 C. 2 /15 D. 3/ 15
5. A box of chocolates contains ten milk chocolates,
eight dark chocolates, and six white chocolates. Lance
randomly chooses a chocolate, eat it, and then
randomly chooses another chocolate. What is the
probability that Lance chooses a milk chocolate and a
dark chocolate?
10/69 B. 9/68 C. 10/ 28 D. 18/24
Directions: State whether the following are dependent write
( DE) and NDE if not dependent events.
1. Reviewing your Math lessons for your Math
examination and getting 90 as a grade in the examination.
2. Preparing a very viable business proposal and getting a
closed deal with the investors.
3. The skies went dark and then a piece of chalk fell.
4. Raining cats and dogs and candles melting .
5. Finishing a college degree and Allen winning the
Jackpot prize in lotto.
Part III: Problem Solving
1. A bag of jelly beans contains ten red, six green, seven yellow,
and five orange jelly beans. What is the probability of getting a red
jelly bean first, then a non-red jelly bean if two jelly beans are
chosen?
2. A bag contains 7 blue, 5 white and 8 red marbles. Two marbles
are drawn without replacement. Find the probability that the first
ball is red then the second is blue.
3. A bottle contains 20 blue bags and 15 red
bags. If two bags are picked at random one after
the other without a replacement, what is the
probility that the first bag is blue and then the
second bag is red?
LEARNING
OUTCOMES
Write multiplicative comparisons based on:
• Multiplication number sentences
• Illustrations arranged in a grid

Fun Fact!
A grid is an arrangement of
objects in rows and columns.
LET’S RECALL!

Multiplication is repeated addition. We can count these pencils by adding two six times.

2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 12
We can also write this as

2 × 6 = 12
We can write this as a multiplicative comparison:

8 is 2 times as 8 is 4 times as
or
many as 4 many as 2
We can write this as a multiplication number sentence:

2×4=8 or 4×2=8
THINK ABOUT
THIS!
Complete the statements based on the picture:

24 is 6 times as many as ?

24 is 4 times as many as ?

6×4 = ?

LET’S PRACTICE
MORE!
Illustrate the multiplication sentence
7 × 5 = 35 using objects, and then write a

REMEMBER
We can write comparisons in two
ways:

16 is 2 times as many as 8
or
16 is 8 times as many as 2
